Albert Payne Obituary

Albert Hampton Payne Sr., 81, of Charlottesville, passed away after a battle with a long illness on Monday, March 19, 2007, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born June 24, 1925, in Camden, New Jersey, he was the son of the late, Russell Payne and Mollie Chamberlain Payne. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cenneth Sue Payne; a son, Michael Richard Payne; two sisters, Evelyn Dill and Norma Shifflett; and five brothers, Thomas Payne, Colin Randolph Payne, Rip Payne, Russell Payne, and George Payne.

Albert was a United States Navy veteran of World War II where he was in the Normandy Invasion and received the silver and bronze stars. He was a TV Service Technician and had worked for Midway Electric Company, Music Center, and Willoughby Electronics.

Surviving him are his wife of 61 years, Helen Smith Payne of Charlottesville; two sons, Albert H. Payne Jr. and his wife, Cherry, of Charlottesville and Dennis William Payne and his wife, Donna, of Palmyra; five grandchildren, Albert H. Payne III, Christina Payne, Matt Payne, Karen Payne, and Brandon Payne; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Adelle Hall, Margaret Carrico and her husband, Russell, and Connie Armstrong; four brothers, Raymond Payne, Carl Payne, Danny Payne and his wife, Shelby, and Joseph Payne and his wife, Scottie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2007, at Holly Memorial Gardens with the Reverend David Hallingshead officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

The family expresses many thanks to Dr. Gordon Morris, his staff, and Martha Jefferson Hospital for their kindness and understanding during Albert's illness.
