Allen Ingling Obituary

Allen Lloyd Ingling

March 5, 1937 - August 9, 2024

Allen Lloyd Ingling passed away suddenly, on August 9, 2024. He was born in Grand Rapids Michigan to the late Carl Raymond and Madeline Ingling on March 5, 1937. He spent most of his childhood near Walkersville, Maryland where the family had a dairy farm. The family moved to St. Petersburg, Pennsylvania where they established the Rootspread Tree Planting Company, a Christmas tree planting equipment company, and a Christmas tree farm. After high school, Allen enlisted in the Army and spent two years in Korea and Japan. Upon his return, he enrolled at the University of Maryland and graduated with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, he worked at Honeywell supporting NASA projects among others. Supported by the GI Bill, he attended the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Upon graduation, he became a faculty member of the Veterinary Science Department of the University of Maryland, College Park where he taught courses and provided veterinary services to the various University animal farms. During his long tenure at the University, his accomplishments included helping to establish the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and acting as the Faculty Director for the construction and subsequent modifications of the Veterinary Medicine Department Research Facility on the Campus. He spent three years at Edgerton College, Kenya under a USAID Grant where he taught courses and was consulted on College facility improvements. He was recruited by NOAA to help improve the humane hunting of whales by both the Eskimos in Alaska and the Makah Indians in Washington State. After retirement from the University, he worked with the Maryland Department of Agriculture where he performed necropsies and also was instrumental in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the various state diagnostic laboratories. His impact with the latter earned him the honor of State Employee of the Year. He moved to Earlysville, VA in 2016 and became an active member of the Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards. He was a tireless worker on the group's various activities, including being an instructor in their Tree Steward Training Program. And, he was instrumental in introducing the use of mechanized tools and equipment to the group's work repertoire

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Raymond Ingling Jr. He is survived by his son, Allen Lloyd Ingling Jr.; his wife, Virginia Ingling; his life partner of 44 years, Kathryn Nepote; his sister, Linda Ingling Rogness; his niece, Barbara Ann Wharton; and his nephews, Allen Wallace Ingling and Carl Thomas Ingling.
