Barbara Cook Obituary

Barbara "Bobbi" Cook, 91, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023 at her home in Charlottesville, Va. Bobbi was the youngest of eight children born to Cleve and Sarah Frazier and was the sole surviving member of the family at the time of her passing.

She is now survived by her husband of 68 years, Bernard Allen Cook of Charlottesville, Va.; her son, Burnley Mark Cook of Manteo, N.C.; and her daughter, Constance Willson Bell of Stuarts Draft, Va. Her beloved son, Walter Allen Cook, preceded her in death in 2021. Bobbi is also survived by two grandchildren, Kellie Cook Bell of Manteo, N.C. and John Matthew Bell of Davenport, Fla. She has three great grandchildren, Zachary Alan Bell and his wife Carley of Stuarts Draft, Va., Naru Illyana Bell of Davenport, Fla. and Burnley Lucas Bell of Manteo, N.C. as well as one great-great grandchild, Gwendolyn Lee Bell of Stuarts Draft, Va. She is also survived by a number of loving nieces and nephews but was particularly close to Maxine Maupin of Lake Monticello, Va. and Mora Richardson of Troy, Va.; as well as the entire Batten family of her late sister, Hattie.

Bobbi often told the story of how she "couldn't boil water" as a young bride. Those who were fortunate in having a place at her table as she grew older, however, will attest to the fact that she was an amazing cook. She was a lover of antiques and collected some beautiful pieces which she treasured throughout her lifetime. She had a charismatic personality which allowed her to make many friends and these too she treasured and kept close to her heart. She will certainly be missed by her husband, family and friends but has left all with many warm memories of her one of a kind spirit.

The family would like to thank all of her wonderful caregivers at Anthology Senior Living of Charlottesville. Their patience, kindness and unfailing compassion made Anthology her "home" for the last year of her life. A special thanks also to Hospice of the Piedmont for their kind work in her last weeks. Particular thanks must also be given to Burnley's lifelong friends, Tom and Charlene Kaufman of Charlottesville, Va. for always being there in this and every difficult time of need over the years.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Bobbi's honor from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at the White Hall Community Building, 2904 Browns Gap Turnpike, Crozet, Virginia 22932.

My heart is heavy hearing of Bobbi´s passing. I worked with her at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Health Department during the late 1960´s through the early 1970´s. Bobbi was kind, generous, and so funny. When I got married in 1971, she sold me a kitchen table with chairs for $25.00, and gave me one of her cast iron skillets which had been handed down to her from a family member. I still use it regularly. In 1972, she bought me a bottle of perfume for my birthday. It fell from her purse and broke as she was walking into the office. The next day she replaced the gift with a Betty Crocker Cookbook, which I also still have and use. I often think of her when using the skillet and cookbook. Her husband Bernard, and her children, were the center of her life. Those who knew her will never forget her beautiful personality. Sending my deepest sympathy and condolences to the family.
