Catharine Anas Obituary

Catharine Settle Anas

July 20, 1938 - July 25, 2021

Catharine Settle Anas, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died at home on Sunday, July 25, 2021 of cancer. She was surrounded by a family that loved her. She was 83 years young.

Catharine graduated from Lane High School, attended Randolph Macon College for women and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. At the time of her graduation from UVA, women were not allowed to graduate from the University. She received her degree through the School of Education. Her major was English/Liberal Arts and she was loyal to these pursuits to the end. Catharine was an avid reader. She was almost never seen without a novel in her hands. Her family lovingly referred to her as "The Grammar Enforcer." Catharine retired from the University Medical School where she served for many years as the Financial Aid Director. In the early 90s, Catharine and her husband, Jim, purchased a cottage on Lockley's Creek in Topping, Virginia. For many years Catharine and Jim enjoyed nothing more than spending the warm summer months on Salt House Lane. Here they were close to the same water where she and her sister, Martha, spent their childhood summers. Catharine and Jim would eventually welcome their own children and grandchildren to visit here and make memories. As a native of Charlottesville, Catharine cherished her past. Many who know and love her know that her family made a mark on this beautiful town. Some of these include Fry Springs Service Station, Settle Tire and the building of many homes in the area. Catharine loved music and from an early age played the flute at Venerable Elementary School. She sang in the choir at Lane High School and played the guitar for the rest of her life. Catharine and her sister, Martha, organized and sang in a homegrown bluegrass band in 2009! Catharine's greatest love was her grandchildren. She was a stellar grandmother from catching minnows at the river to playing "stairball" at her home on Piedmont Avenue.

Catharine is survived by her husband, Jim Anas; her children, Suzannah Fischer (Todd Fisher), Janet Fischer, and Tony Fischer of Charlottesville; her sister, Martha Settle of Scottsville, Virginia; her grandchildren, Redford Fisher of Charlottesville, Va., Brandon Anas of Norfolk, Eric Anas (Megan) of Virginia Beach, Va. and her son-in-law, George Anas (Kellie), St. Mary's, Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her beloved mother and father, Betty and Haynes L. Settle of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Catharine will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

The graveside service for Catharine begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Monticello Memory Gardens, 670 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, Charlottesville, Virginia 22902.
