Cynthia Conte Obituary

Cynthia M. Conte

July 6, 1952 - January 22, 2021

Cynthia Marie Conte, 68, of Charlottesville, Va., died on Friday, January 22, 2021 at the Center for Acute Hospice Care.

Born July 6, 1952 in Eugene, Ore., Cindy was the daughter of Margaret Conti Kummer and M. Joseph Conte, both of whom preceded her in death.

Cindy studied journalism at Radford College and earned a MFA in Creative Writing at UVA. Her early career years were spent as the Bicentennial Editor and Senior Lifestyle Editor of the three New River Newspapers, then as Lifestyle Editor of The Daily Progress. From 1983 through 2019, she held a key role helping operate Michie Tavern, overseeing curation and marketing at the historic property. Cindy enjoyed traveling regionally to explore historic architecture, novel writing, running, collecting antiques, historical renovation, and her much loved cats.

Cindy is survived by brothers, Joseph (Laura) Conti, Jeff (Sally) MacDonald, Gregory MacDonald, and Tony (Missy) Conte; sisters, Joanne Peregoy and Barbara (Richard) Adler; many beloved nieces, nephews and treasured cousins.

Cindy also leaves behind her dear friend Matalie Deane, whom the family thanks for her steadfast friendship and loving support.

Funeral services will be private, and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA.

Jeff, Greg, Joseph, Tony, Barbara and Joanne. Nieces and nephews and Miss Deane. My heart goes out to all of you. Some of my family grew up with several of you, and I still think of you as extended family. I remember Cindy as a beautiful, observant lady who was always interested in the world and its inhabitants. Godspeed to Cindy and God bless you and your family.

My running (though walking in later years) partner, confidant, and mentor. My friend. I loved Cindy and am heartbroken for everyone who loved her. Condolences to the family and her friends.

Very sad to read this news. Cindy was such a pleasure to meet and to speak with when I did stone work up at Michie Tavern, years ago. Sending my condolences to Greg and the entire family. You are in my thoughts.
