Ernest Bomar Obituary

Ernest H. "Blue" Bomar, Jr.

November 8, 2024

Ernest H. "Blue" Bomar, Jr., of Cismont/Keswick, VA passed away peacefully on November 8, 2024 at the age of 96, with his daughters by his side singing to him.

Blue was preceded in death by his wife Joan, daughter and son-in-law Janet and Ed Rush, parents Ernest H. Bomar, Sr. and Lucille Bomar, and sister and brother-in-law Eva and Bill Bennett. He is survived by his daughters Jeanne Sims (Clyde), Mary Ritter (Bob), grandsons and granddaughter Jay Sims (KK), Dan Rush, Nara Rush (Max Billmyer), nieces Bonnie and Bettie, and numerous beloved cousins.

Blue owned Cismont Gulf/Cismont Chevron Service Station before retiring after 49 years, then worked as one of the ushers/security staff of RMC until having to turn in his gear at age 90. He loved and thrived at this job because of the special friendships he made. Blue was a survivor, successfully conquering innumerable medical issues and broken bones, but his "big ole" heart finally wore out. He loved people, especially little children, fishing, oysters, dancing, partying, hanging out with his grandkids and their friends, and having a good time. He always said, "If I can't go and enjoy myself I'll stay home." He rarely stayed home! He loved his Cismont/Keswick friends and was always ready to lend a hand. He was a pitcher with the Charlottesville Retreads Senior Softball team, loved every second of it, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He was the oldest member on the team. Blue, you never met a stranger and you're already missed!

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of the Piedmont, or the charity of your choice.

Mary and all, Randy and I are so sad that we had to miss Blue's services and send-off yesterday (April 12, 2025). We're both a bit old and creaky now, but our memories of Blue (and you and Bob) will be strong for years, and so fun. I haven't known many legends but Blue was surely one in that community. One friend who did get there yesterday said it was the best memorial service he'd been to in many a year. That's appropriate for Blue. Our best to you and all--so many--who loved and respected him, including
Barbara and Randy Fitzgerald

Blue was a local hero and favorite person, his twinkling smile and friendly conversation was always a bright spot in your day. We will miss him so, thanks for the memories.

As a young boy in the 70's living a hundred yards from the station I have fond memories of walking up to get a coke out of Blue's old timey coke machine. Blue and Dave Stancil were always welcoming and spending time talking with a young man and what I was doing. A long standing member of the church I knew him well and know he was a good, hard working man always willing to help another out. Such a sad loss, but know he lived a full, loving and generous life, always helping others. Very sorry for your loss.

I'm just learning of the passing of Blue. Very sad to see this. I bowled in a league at Mountain Bowl many years ago with him and Joan......they were such a joy to be around. May he Rest in Peace. To his family, I send my deepest condolences

Blue seemed to never forget people. I moved away from Albemarle after service and came home often to visit family in Lindsay passing Cismont Gulf as we headed further north on Rte. 231. A honk and a wave back if Blue was outside. Blue was a friend to all and provided excellent service to the community and the Harrington family. Later on in life, a daughter learned through her Dad that I was in Florida and when here they stopped by for a very refreshing visit from home and from their Dad. Blue was the forever friend...he proved it with his life of service to others even after he closed Cismont "Guff". Blue leaves us a treasure chest of the most fond memories we will cherish through our daily lives and a "way to live your life fully".

Blue was a delight and an inspiration among the Retreads. When he was still pitching well and hitting for a high average in his 80´s he was the subject of comments like "you should have seen him play when he was 70." Not many can have that said about him!
He always had a smile on his face and made it clear at all times that he loved being alive.
