F. Bosley "Bos" Crowther III

1935 - 2022

F. Crowther Obituary

Bos was born in New York City, on July 21, 1935, to parents Florence and Bosley. He was raised in White Plains, N.Y., alongside brothers, John and Jeff.

Bos's education began at Woodberry Forest School, and from there he attended Princeton University. After receiving his bachelor's in English in 1956 he went on to concurrently earn his JD from Columbia and an MBA from NYU. While at Princeton, Bos was an avid participant in the Press Club, primarily covering sporting events.

While attending Princeton Bos met the two loves of his life, first wife Barbara Miller who he married in 1960, and second wife Margery "Gerry" Clifford who he married in 1999 after Barb's death. Bos and Barb had two children, Barbie, born in 1962, and Boz, born in 1966.

Bos's professional career began as an associate with LeBouf-Lamb in New York. In 1970 he took the position of Head Legal Counsel for the American Gas Association in D.C., and the family moved to Northern Virginia. However, Bos quickly tired of corporate work, later in life saying that he knew his time was over when he walked into his office after 4 years and saw the same set of files on his desk that had been there the first day he came in. He decided to start a farming business that would serve investors as a tax shelter, and Agriprises, Inc. was born in 1974. The family moved to Troy, Va., 12 miles from Charlottesville, in the summer of 1976, to manage the enterprise full-time.

When farming took a severe downturn in the late-70s and early-80s, Bos returned to the law, hanging out a shingle in the nearby town of Palmyra, Va., seat for Fluvanna County. He took great pride in representing the people of Fluvanna, achieving his greatest professional success in the early 1990s when he earned a multi-million dollar settlement for a class of several hundred plaintiffs, in a Federal lawsuit against CCM&SM for deceptive sales practices while flipping properties at Lake Monticello.

Bos is survived by his wife, Gerry; his children, Barbie and Boz; and three grandchildren Leah, Welles and Phoebe.

What a wonderful man one can´t go down the little road in Palmyra Va that grew up in Fluvanna County and not remember his office right down from the Courthouse. I can remember Three Attorneys my Mother Ann worked for George Smith and as an adolescent remember visiting with Bosley, Frank Gallo and the Clerks up at the Clerks office A lot of memories when I couldn´t even look over the counter and pull myself up to say Hi! Evelyn Watts, Linda Lenherr, Elsie Faris, Roxanne Tryall and Bosely Crowther before returning to my mothers office where George Smith and Frank Gallo shared and office he will be missed a true staple of Fluvanna County and my childhood..

So long, Bos. We crossed paths intermittently due to a random pattern of shared interests; my life was enriched by our contacts. You were genial, bemused, quizzical, courtly, and chronically rumpled. A wise man, knowledgeable about the world and its inhabitants. I will miss you.

I am so glad I got to know this wonderful man, even though it was only for the last three years of his life.
A group of us would gather in the lobby at University Village for a glass of wine before dinner, and Bos would tell stories and sing songs. He was the life of the party until he could no longer come down to the lobby, and then we missed him terribly. He knew all the good old songs that I knew, plus a few I had never heard before, and he usually made his exit singing "So long, it's been to know ya." What a great guy!

I will always remember Bosley for hand delivering a single rose to every lady in the village of Palmyra on Valentine´s Day.

To the family of Bosley Crowther - I am so sorry for your loss. I first met "Bos" when we relocated from Maryland to Lake Monticello back in the '80s. I thought it might be fun to practice law in Palmyra, so Bosley kindly took some time to talk about that. Later, he invited my husband and me and our 8 year old to his farm for lunch. I will never forget the sight of Bos, showing this little girl his cows and how to romp in the stacks of hay in the barn. When they finished their mini-tour, he asked her if she had any questions. She had never been up close to a cow before, so she said, "why do your cows still have the price tags on their ears?" Of course, he loved that and we loved him for the generosity he had shown the three of us. So, that's what I remember: A man who honestly and unreservedly shared himself with others and met their needs when he could. I am sorry for your loss, Crowther family. Bosley was one of a kind!
