Dr. Joseph Flamini, age 71, passed away at his home on Monday, August 6, 2018, surrounded by family.
Born to an Italian father and mother, he was preceded in death by his parents and sister. Joe grew up in Philadelphia, later attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
As an engineer at Bell Laboratories and Siemens Corporation, he was on the frontlines of cellular technology. He then pursued his love of engineering by forming The Esoteric Group Inc., one of the first surveillance and security companies in Central Virginia.
Joe served in the United States Army and then in his community for more than 20 years as a police officer. Joe was one of a kind and known for his tremendous generosity. He was inventive, optimistic, witty, clever, and ultimately charming. He was happiest when at the home he built sitting on the deck with his family and his dogs.
Dr. Flamini is survived by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, and many wonderful friends.
A mass celebrating Joe's life will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 401 Alderman Road, on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at 11 a.m.
