Gregory Allen Morris
July 28, 1952 - October 18, 2024
Gregory Allen Morris, beloved by family and friends, left this world a better place when he passed away on October 18, 2024. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin "Noots" Morris and Viola Morris, and his younger son, Rafe Gregory Morris. Greg was deeply and dearly loved by his family; Mary, his wife and partner of 50 years, older son, Boyd, and daughter in law, Amber, who welcomed Greg into their home and gave him loving care during the last year of his life. Greg leaves one sister, Sharon Renee Morris, and her wife Frances Heim. Greg and his sister were extremely close throughout their lives. Six beautiful grandchildren were blessed to have Greg in their lives. Greg leaves, with much love, Alahna, Brandy, Aubrey, Kelsey, Brooklynn, and Emerson. Greg was also the adoptive father for grands Brandy and Brooklynn. Greg also leaves, brother in-law Michael Barbour, and his wife Mary Barbour and their son Micah.
Greg had a contagious laugh, with a grin as wide as his Boston Terriers. He loved the company of friends and family. Oh, the stories Greg could tell an enraptured audience. He was such a pleasure to be around. Throughout his life, Greg kept several lifelong friends. Among them were Dan Williams, Gary Settle, Mike Bowman, and Ed Hisghman, who were best friends throughout the decades.
Greg worked hard throughout those decades. He put himself through community college, began a BA program, always working; Pepsi, Dunkin'. At 22 years of age, Greg and Mary were married, and went on to have two beautiful boys, an incredible daughter in law, and six precious grandchildren. Greg's first "adult" job was as a guard in a prison in southside VA. It was then, while living between Galax and Hillsville, that Greg decided to make use of his Law Enforcement AS. He applied to be a Trooper with the Virginia State Police. It was onl! Throughout Greg's career with VSP, Greg worked as Trooper, Investigator BCI, Explosive Technician, Range Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, SWAT Member and Supervisor.
When working in the capacity of SWAT Supervisor, Greg was shot in a training accident. He was gravely injured; lost one kidney, permanent spinal injury that required learning to walk again. The pain from the injuries Greg endured would be with him for the rest of his life, but he took it all in stride, recovered as best could be, and continued on. Due to his injuries, he retired from the VSP on January 1, 1995, after an over 20-year career. He worked briefly after his retirement with the VSP in a part-time compacity as a Background Investigator assisting with VSP hopefuls background checks, and In the Line of Duty Death investigations.
Moving from his VSP career, Greg established himself as a Financial Planner for MetLife, where he remained for a decade. Then, Greg took a job with security at The Mellon Estate in Delaplane. Greg enjoyed this assignment so much, and the beauty of the area, that he became the Director of Security during Mrs. Mellon's last years. He thought the world of Mrs. Mellon.
And, finally, Greg ended his working life by taking a job of Background Investigator, with his favorite, VSP. He did so enjoy interviewing VSP hopefuls. It was an appropriate finale to Greg's professional accomplishments. It was an incredible work life.
Greg spent his last years on this Earth enjoying family, friends, and pets. He loved to sit with his grandchildren.... anywhere, and spent time relaxing on the grass with his dogs. Medical issues required that he led a quieter life, and he moved into this with dignity, understanding and acceptance. Greg was a man of integrity, honor and intent. He was admired, loved and adored beyond words.
Burial and graveside service for Greg will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2 p.m. at Holly Memorial Gardens, located at 3251 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
