John Anthony Winn Winter

1954 - 2023

John Anthony Winn "Tony" Winter, 69, of Earlysville, VA, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023 surrounded by his family at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on January 14, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul's Memorial Church.

Tony was born in Tanganyika, now known as Tanzania, in East Africa to Edward Henry Winter and Elizabeth Stoffel Winter on August 13, 1954. Tony's father was an anthropologist doing field research in East Africa. As a young child, his father's work brought him back to the states, and eventually to Charlottesville, VA, where his father was a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Virginia. Tony married his wife, Primm Winter, on June 21, 2001 in Charlottesville, VA. He worked as a Service Technician for AmeriGas for 25 years. Tony loved the outdoors, and even built a teepee for his family to camp in for fun on their property. He also loved going to the beach, and was famous for his sunburns. Tony loved cars and motorcycles. While he enjoyed tinkering with his vehicles, he mostly lost parts and bounced the wrench; but enjoyed puttering regardless. Tony cherished his children and grandchildren, and adored spending time with them as much as possible. One of the favorite pastimes was playing Zelda with his boys.

Tony is preceded in death by his father, Edward Henry Winter, PhD, and his mother, Elizabeth Stoffel Winter.

Tony is survived by his wife, Mary Primm Powderhorn Winter; his three children, John Anthony Winn Winter, John Mancil Powderhorn Miller, and David Anthony Powderhorn Winter; his three Grandchildren, Elijah Kai Houchens, John Mancil Rivera Miller, and Quinton Rivera Miller. Tony is also survived by his brothers, Christopher Powell Winter, and nephew Angus Edward Winter; Nicholas Savalle Winter, and his wife, San Winter.

The family of Tony wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Martha Jefferson Hospital, especially the nursing staff, for all of their support and care while tending to Tony during his battle with cancer.
