Lucy Briggs Obituary

Lucy Harris Briggs went home to be with the Lord on December 20, 2025, at Cedars Nursing Home in Charlottesville, VA. She was born on February 21,1941 to the late Joseph Henry Harris, Sr., and Rosa Smith Harris of Albemarle County.

She was preceded in death by eight siblings which included six sisters, Frances, Louise, Grace, Pauline, Margaret, and Estelle along with two brothers Hugh and Joseph, Jr.

Lucy retired from the University of Virginia Hospital as an LPN with over 30 years of service. Working as a nurse was her passion and she had a heart for her patients. She worked primarily in the OB/GYN unit and received numerous accolades over the years for the excellent care she provided to her patients. After retirement, Lucy enjoyed writing poetry and speaking with UVA medical students about their future in healthcare.

She is survived by her loving family which includes a daughter, Jacqueline Hofler, and Thomas Hofler, Jr., the father of her grandson, Thomas Hofler III, a sister Sylvia Coles and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Lucy will always be remembered with love and for her heart that was always full of thankfulness and gratitude. The family would like to thank Mountainside Senior Living and Cedars Nursing Home for the care they provided her with over the years.

J.F. Bell Funeral Home will oversee the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the UVA School of Nursing's Annual Fund in her name would greatly honor her legacy – https://giving.virginia.edu/ways-to-give/.

It will, I was hoping to get together as a family to honor Aunt Lucy. She was so good to the three ( Anthony, Millie and I) us when we were younger. When we were living with my Aunt Susie, Aunt Sylvia, Aunt Lucy and Aunt Pauline made sure we knew who they were to us, by visiting often. A fond memory was during their visits Aunt Lucy and Aunt Pauline would bring us penny candy and we would watch American Bandstand dance the Bunny Hop around the dining room.

We loved Miss Lucy. We got attached to her at Mountainside when my mom lived there and I was able to see her several times while she was at the Cedars as well, so very sorry for your loss. She was a very sweet lady.
