Mark A. Mincer

1962 - 2023

Mark A. Mincer, 60, of Keswick, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on January 28, 2023, after being diagnosed with glioblastoma in October of 2020. He was born on September 19, 1962, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to Robert Hampton Mincer and Sally Bailey Mincer. After graduating from Charlottesville High School in 1980 and UVA's McIntire School of Commerce in 1985, Mark officially joined the family business, Mincer's University of Virginia Imprinted Sportswear. He took great pride in expanding the store - first at The Corner location, then to online sales, and eventually to a second storefront at The Shops at Stonefield.

Outside of work, Mark had a deep love for cheering on UVA Sports and coaching girls' lacrosse, initially with the youngest ages. He began with informal practices at the neighborhood fields when his own children were small, and, over the years, he moved up with them through elementary, middle, and high school teams. For the last several years before his diagnosis, his great joy was as assistant coach of the JV Girls' Lacrosse team at Monticello High School.

Upon his diagnosis, and after his surgery, Mark made the most of his remaining time enjoying his family and friends, and sharing his knowledge of running the family business with his son, Calvin. He joyfully planned daily walks and talks with his friends, family, and neighbors. Between December 2020 and June 2022, he logged over 1,100 miles walking around his neighborhood. These visits and walks were some of the highlights of his remaining months.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Tara Mincer of Keswick, Va.; his son, Calvin Mincer of Charlottesville, Va.; his daughters, Bailey Mincer of Cleveland, Ohio, Sydney Mincer of Atlanta, Ga., and AJ Mincer of Nashville, Tenn.; his sister, Ellen Mincer, and family friend, Amy Verner, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and his dear friend and faithful office manager, Elizabeth Pitts, of Palmyra, Va.

We owe the 27 months of life that we were able to share after Mark's diagnosis to the amazing team of professionals at the UVA Medical Center in every capacity, including the greeters at the doors. We particularly owe a debt of gratitude to Eleanor Seid, Camilo Fadul, and Ashok Asthagiri.

We want to thank Dameon Harris of Peaceful Minds Home Management and Personal Care, for his companionship, devotion, and selfless care. Even when speaking became difficult, Mark would still express "You're the best, Dameon."

A celebration of Mark's life will occur on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 3 p.m. at The Paramount Theater. All are welcome. Donations in Mark's memory may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont and the American Kidney Fund. Over the course of Mark's cancer journey, we became aware of kidney paired donation and the need for several people we know to find a living donor. It would be our joy if our network connects even one person to a life-saving kidney.
