Richard Price "Dick" Spitler

Richard Spitler Obituary

Richard "Dick" Price Spitler, 71, of Crozet, passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday, September 19, 2007, while vacationing in Bozeman, Montana.

"Dick" was born July 20, 1936, in Kingston, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Eugene L. and Katherine P. Spitler.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy P. Spitler; two sons, James "Jimmy" R. Spitler of Newport News, Virginia, and David "Dave" P. Spitler and his wife, Kim, of Palmyra, Virginia; and two brothers-in-law, Warren Payne and his wife, Virginia, of Middlesex, New Jersey, and Barry Payne and his wife, Mary, of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory his granddaughter, Sarah, who he always considered his "special visitor".

"Dick" received his education at Johns Hopkins University, where he was also a starting pitcher on the baseball team, Hampden-Sydney College, and received his Masters in Education from the University of Virginia. He retired after 34 years with Albemarle County Schools in 1996. He began his career teaching at McIntire School before becoming Principal at Rose Hill Elementary and finishing as Principal at Red Hill Elementary.

After retirement, he and Nancy loved spending time with their family most of all, including summer vacations at their residence in Nags Head, North Carolina. They traveled extensively on different cruises to the Caribbean where he and Nancy enjoyed snorkeling, fishing, and visiting different ports of call. "Dick" also enjoyed reading World War II books, gardening, and the camaraderie of countless neighbors and friends who share with the Spitler family in their tragic loss.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at Tabor Presbyterian Church of Crozet. The Reverend Dr. JewellAnn Parton will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Virginia Chapter, 3805 Cutshaw Avenue, Suite 200, Richmond, VA 23230; the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 696, Crozet, VA 22932; or the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Crozet, VA 22932.

Jimmy Spitler

My Dad has had a huge influence on brother Dave and myself. He was the best father a boy could ever ask for.
He was so generous, understanding and helpfull in every and any way.
We were so lucky to have him for so long. We wish more than anything we could have him back.
Nancy will obvoisly miss him the most as they were married for 46 years and had such a great relationship, which in this age does not seem that common.
Kim and Sarah miss him so very much also.
We are just trying to live one day at a time and try and get though this - it hurts SO much that it's almost indescribable and impossible to put into words.
This was a great man that was loved and admired by all. He has, we believe sent a few signs to show that hes still there with us, and that gives us hope that we will all be together again - maybe in that big beach in the sky.
Dad, we love you so much - I'm crying trying to type this - I love you and see you again.
