Sarah Humphrey Obituary

Sarah Davis Humphrey

June 1, 1930 - March 2, 2025

Sarah (Sally) Davis Humphrey, 94, passed away March 2, 2025 in Charlottesville VA. Sally was born in New Castle, PA, on June 1, 1930. She was the daughter of Ruth Genkinger Eroe and William James Eroe.

Sally was a graduate of Westminster College (PA) and taught business education at Neshannock High School in New Castle for 14 years. She was fortunate to have had many close friends, including several from childhood and college, who remained lifelong friends.

Sally relocated to Berkeley, CA, in 1977 and immediately fell in love with the Bay Area. A passion for real estate led her to a 20-year career selling and investing in property in the East Bay. She was an owner/broker at Chateau Real Estate and later Marvin Gardens, both in Albany, CA. She was a former President of the Berkeley Board of Realtors and an active participant in numerous Board committees.

In 1993, Sally married Joseph "Pepe" Humphrey. Pepe's career in academia eventually led them to the University of Virginia, where he chaired the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Sally immediately embraced Charlottesville and the UVA community. She and Pepe enjoyed hosting fellow professors and graduate students.

With curiosity for learning, life in Charlottesville gave Sally all the opportunities she needed to take classes in the classics or learn a new language. An avid reader, she always maintained that when one of her daughters recommended a book, she had already read it! Above all her enthusiasm, though, was a passion for bridge. Her bridge partners will agree that she was competitive to the end.

Sally was a long-time member of St. Paul's Memorial Church, where she participated in their community outreach programs and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Salvation Army. Until very recently, Sally, along with her devoted friend Euni Deter, could be found in the second row nearly every Sunday.

She is predeceased by her husband, Pepe Humphrey, and her sister, Elizabeth Eroe Chill. She is survived by her three daughters, Elizabeth (Liz) Davis Cullen, Anne Davis Livingston, and Patricia (Patty) Davis Shepherd; her brother, William (Bill) Eroe; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her stepdaughters: Luisa Humphrey, Fiona Stonehouse Humphrey, and Katie Humphrey Lynch.

Services will be held Saturday March 15, 2025 at St. Paul's Memorial Church at 1:00 pm.

Though petite in stature, Sally was an impressive person. She combined a strong sense of humor with an inquisitive mind . I always enjoyed playing bridge with her and her friendliness was always apparent. Sally never took herself too seriously and would laugh easily and kindly. Ever young, she remained an inspiration. I will miss her.
