David Smither Spicer of Charlottesville died Monday, January 12, 2015, at a local hospital, surrounded by family. He was 84 years old.Born January 1, 1931, in Keswick, Virginia, he was the son of the late Thomas E. Spicer Sr. and Camille Smither Spicer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Roger Denney, Jr.Mr. Spicer served his country during the Korean War from 1951 until he was honorably discharged in 1953. Returning home to Charlottesville, he joined his father and brother as co-owner and operator of Spicer Brothers Cleaners, a family-owned business that served the University of Virginia and the Charlottesville community for nearly 60 years.As a young man, Mr. Spicer accepted the Gospel according to the teachings of Jesus. This became his life and he was faithful to it all his days. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Cooley Spicer, whom he married July 21, 1955. In addition, he is survived by six children, Sandy C. Spicer of Crozet, Virginia, David A. Spicer and his wife, Peggy, of Milford, Virginia, Charles E. Spicer of Charlottesville, Virginia, Mark K. Spicer and his wife, Carol, of Cismont, Virginia, Mary Ann Spicer of Chesterfield, Virginia, and Tim P. Spicer and his wife, Amanda, of Crozet, Virginia; and eight grandchildren, Ivy, Whitney, Kelsey, Addison, Nick, Chelsea, Laci and Harley; and two great-grandchildren, Lila and Lucas; brother and life-long business partner, Thomas E. Spicer, Jr. and his wife, Jane; sister, Barbara S. Denney; and nieces, Pat, Sue and Cindy; and nephew, Toby and many friends. A special thanks to his caregivers at The Heritage Inn. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2015, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens. The service will be conducted by Mr. Sam McCracken, Mr. Stephen Jayne, and Mr. Dennis Kinnan.A visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2015, at the funeral home.Pallbearers will be his sons and grandsons, David A. Spicer, Charles E. Spicer, Mark K. Spicer, Tim P. Spicer, Nick C. Spicer and Addison B. Spicer. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Davis and Bruce Chesbrough. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlottesville, VA 22903 or the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, P.O.
