Thomas Gentry Obituary

Thomas "Tommy" J. Gentry, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on August 27, 2025. He was the son of the late Mary C. Gentry and Edward Hall Gentry Jr.

Tommy was preceded in death by his siblings Linda Gale, John Edward, and Joseph Gentry. He is survived by his husband, Carlos Afanador of Houston, Texas; his sisters, T.C. Clark (Wayne) and Janet Houchens (Timmy), both of Chville, Virginia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Among his many loved ones, two very special nieces, Jessica (Lucy) and Vanda (Uncle Fred) Houchens, shared countless adventures with their Uncle Tommy-from New Orleans to Mexico to cruises wherever the water called.

Tommy loved anything to do with the water, whether it was relaxing by the pool or enjoying the beach. Yet the only thing he loved more than water was his family. Known for his warmth, humor, and generosity, he never met a stranger and was always ready for an adventure. His favorite opening line, "Hi, I'm Tommy, how do you like me so far?" perfectly captured his joyful spirit and ability to connect instantly with others.

Tommy was a devoted caregiver, staying by his mother's side until the very end. He loved his family and friends deeply and was always the one to call in times of need-"Call Tommy, we will figure it out" was a motto he lived by.

Tommy's adventurous heart, his loyalty, and his laughter will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved him. Please watch over us, Tommy, as Lord knows we will need it.

A Celebration of Life for Tommy will be held in Charlottesville at a later date, with details to be shared on Facebook once arrangements are finalized.

Tommy was my dear friend for 20 years. Lots of football, Nascar races, a few bets made along the way & lots of cooking & laughter. Then he took me to family vacation in Cape Hatteras to meet TC, Wayne, Janet & his nieces. What a blast that was. I mess him terribly.

Tommy really was one of a kind and I know he will be truly missed. He sold me many pairs of shoes when he worked at H & M. I know he is up there now with Mike and Ron catching up on old times and enjoying himself and smiling down on us.

I met Tommy back in 1977, when he was very young and we all liked to have a good time. He was also a co-worker at Centel in later years. Tommy was a lot of fun and always smiling. My heart goes out to his family...may you find peace in knowing he was loved.

Tommy, what words can I write about a friend that was always smiling, there for everyone, willing to step up, help and just be there for each other. Tommy you are missed, however your memory lives on in the lives you have touched. I hold dear our times we had together. Rest on my friend.
