Thomas Slaughter Obituary

Thomas W. Slaughter, Jr. "Tommy", age 93, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at the Center For Acute Hospice Care. Born on May 11, 1930 in Charlottesville, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas W. Slaughter, Sr. and Cecil R. Slaughter. In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by Peggy, his wife of 64 years; his siblings, Ronald P. Slaughter and Jane S. Sprouse.

After graduating from Lane High School, Tommy served his country in the United States Navy. Leaving the Navy with an Honorable Discharge, he returned to Charlottesville to begin a long career in sales including automotive parts, electronics and the insurance industry. Tommy was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and was honored to have been recognized as Deacon Emeritus. A fan of UVA sports, he served as an usher for the football and basketball teams for 50 years. Tommy and Peggy enjoyed travelling with friends in the United States and extensively throughout Europe. Their favorite vacations, however, were summers in Hilton Head with Dotti, Ronnie, and Andrew. In his spare time, Tommy could be found in his woodworking shop crafting beautiful solid wood furniture. Tommy was a member of the Charlottesville Volunteer Fire Department, the Elks Lodge (389) and served on Charlottesville's Dogwood Board for many years.

Tommy is survived by his daughter, Dotti Bradshaw and her husband, Ronnie; grandsons, Andrew and Joshua; great-grandson, Asher; a niece and several nephews; and a devoted friend, Jeanne Bailes.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation and gratitude to family and friends who have reached out and to the staff at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge who provided wonderful care for Tommy during the past 10 months.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville, VA. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11 a.m. Dr. Joel Jenkins and Dr. Rob Pochek will be officiating. Interment will be private at Riverview Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902, Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911, or a charity of your choice.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hillandwood.com.

Tommy will be greatly missed and will be remembered as a friendly true southern gentleman.
