Arthur David Obituary

Dr. Arthur B. David, M.D; D.D.S.

AGE: 90 •

Dr. Arthur B. David passed away peacefully of natural causes at home on November 16, 2011. He was born July 4, 1921, to Assyrian parents and raised in Elizabeth, NJ. Dr. David studied dentistry at the Medical College of Virginia. After graduation in 1945 he enlisted in the medical corps of the 88th infantry as a lieutenant. He was stationed in Trieste, Italy. He was a great tennis player as well. The United States Army selected him to head the U.S. Tennis Team. Due to his new position he traveled Europe extensively on "goodwill tours" playing matches and organizing local tournaments. By the time he ended his military career, he was promoted to captain. When he returned home after World War II (1947), he opened his dental practice. After one year of dentistry he decided to study medicine. He graduated from the University of Zurich, School of Medicine in Switzerland, where he met his future wife, Rosa (Roesli) Sutter.

Dr. David did his internship at the then Martland Medical Center in Newark and plastic surgery residency at the Veteran's Hospital in East Orange, NJ. He specialized in maxillofacial surgery. In 1964 Dr. David moved with his wife to Morristown, NJ where he opened his plastic surgery practice. Four years later in 1968, Dr. David joined Dr. Mario Berschadsky to form their practice, David & Berschadsky, M.D.'s, P.A. also in Morristown, NJ. He was on the staff of the Saint Clare's, Chilton Memorial and Morristown Memorial Hospitals. At Saint Clare's Hospital he was on the Cancer Committee, Credentials Committee, Emergency Room Committee, and infection Control Committee, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees. Dr. David retired from private practice in 1995 and devoted himself more to his many interests. Dr. David loved to visit art galleries, he enjoyed ballet and classical music, and he seldom missed a Saturday afternoon opera performance on the radio coming directly from the Met. Looking for antiques was another of his hobbies and he sometimes jokingly told his friends that his and Roesli's home was built around a 250 year old English door, which had already been stored in the garage. Arthur also loved sports. In addition to tennis he enjoyed skiing and soon was much more daring than his wife. He also was a longtime member of the Mendham Golf and Tennis Club. His friends and colleagues were privileged to work with Arthur as he was a superb surgeon and a true gentleman. He will be greatly missed by all.

Dr. David is survived by his wife, two nieces and nephew with their families and many cousins.

A memorial service is planned for December 16, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham, NJ. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. www.baileyfuneralhomes.com

I still remember Arthur with fond memories.
He and Roselyn accomplished so much but after his car accident Arthur was never recovered. And After Arthur’s passing, Roselyn couldn’t survive without him. They shall Rest In Peace.
They were my best friends. I hope I could stay in touch with their family especially with Joe David, Arthur’s nephew.

We will miss Arthur. He touched so many of our lives. I have known Arthur and his family since 1960. When my children were younger and needed medical help, I called Arthur and he was always ready to help. As my children were growing, he continued to show interest in what they were doing. After he and Rosalie were married we always stayed in touch. One of the most memorable times was when Arthur and Rosalie traveled to Upper Peninsula of Michigan and spent a week with me in Houghton.

What a wonderful friend and neighbor you were. Always with a warm hello and genuine interest in my family. Will remember you on your tractor mowing your lawn, holiday parties and your kindness.

As a victim of Parry-Rhomberg syndrome and 2 smashed fingers from an accident at 12, Dr. David helped heal a troubled soul. Words can never describe the admiration and respect I will forever have for Dr. David. He took a disfigured girl and gave her a smile. I had 3 operations throughout my teenage years. I will never forget his calm presence and his incredible hands. After 30 years, I can still remember his hands. I am forever grateful for his dedication to his profession and thankful for the opportunity to know him. My sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.

Too many memories and things to say to a person as special as you. You were always our cheerleader; one of the last things you said to me was to keep my chin up- things will be better soon and you knew it would. I'll remember it and you forever Uncle Arthur- thank you for opening my eyes and mind to so many beautiful things.

Our sincerest condolences to Mrs. David and her family.
Our first child suffered an accident while in a babysitter's care in 1969. At 11:30 PM Dr. David appeared in the ER at Riverside Hospital and took care of our daughter who to this day bears hardly any scars. We will never forget his kind and skillful hands. His gentleness comforted us at a very difficult time.

My condolences to the David family. When I was 10 in 1973 I fell into a rock wall knocking out my 2 front teeth. My lower lip exploded. Dr. David sewed my lip back so well that it took me years to see where the scar was. As it says in obituary, he was a superb surgeon!
