Jean Averett Obituary

Jean Ward Averett

AGE: 88 • Chatham

Jean Ward Averett, 88, died Sunday, July 22, 2012 of heart failure at her home in Chatham. She was born on April 13, 1924 in Paintsville, Kentucky, the only child of Eugene and Edith Eckerle Ward. "Ward" lived at Dixiedale Farm with her late husband, Sam, from the time of their marriage in 1961. Mrs. Averett graduated from Stephens College, moved to New York and took residence at the Barbizon Hotel for Women. After attending secretarial school she held some wonderful jobs and thoroughly enjoyed her life in New York. Her roommate's sailor brother introduced her to another sailor on leave - Sam Averett of Chatham, NJ. After a courtship that included evenings at the Stork Club and the 21 Club, they were married in New York and moved first into Orchard Cottage on the Dixiedale Farm property, then later into the main house. A great lover and supporter of music, Mrs. Averett attended the Metropolitan Opera for decades, as well as the American Ballet Theatre in the summertime. Together with her husband Sam, she enjoyed travel - especially Europe and London - where they had dear friends. They sailed on the last voyage of the Queen Mary and one of the first Atlantic crossings of the QE2, and enjoyed many cruises through the Mediterranean. She was an accomplished cook and gardener, well known for her beautiful orchids, and used to drive an antique car to run errands in Chatham. Perhaps Mrs. Averett will be most remembered for her love of dogs. From her first dog, Martini, which she acquired as a career girl in New York, to her last, Maggie, who was by her side till the end, she was never without at least one dog.

Predeceased by her husband, Sam by less than eleven weeks, Mrs. Averett is survived by a large family of loving cousins, nieces, and nephews, and their families, and by several special lifelong friends.

Funeral services were private. Those who wish may contribute in her memory to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, 575 Woodland Ave., Madison NJ 07940. To send a condolence please visit www.bradleyfuneralhomes.com
