Katharine Dougherty Obituary

Katharine Sutro Dougherty

August 31, 1928 - June 2, 2021

Katharine Sutro Dougherty, 92, of Basking Ridge and Morristown, NJ, died peacefully of natural causes on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

Born and raised in Chestnut Hill, PA, she graduated from Germantown Friends School and Colby-Sawyer College; she continued her studies in Art History at the University of Pennsylvania. She was married for 44 years to Kenneth W. Dougherty, who predeceased her in 1999. She also was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Sutro (Elizabeth Newcomet), and a younger brother, Charles W. Sutro, all of Chestnut Hill.

An avid gardener, she was a member and past president of the Garden Club of Morristown, and a past director of the Garden Club of America. She spent many happy summers with her family at their summer home in the Adirondack Mountains, where she loved to canoe and swim. When she was not gardening or spending time in the Adirondacks, she was often seen walking one of her beloved Shelties at Loantaka Park. She was a member of the Morristown Club and Morris County Golf Club.

In 2019, she was presented with the 80-Year Lifetime Achievement Award by the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, MA, the Center's highest honor. At that time, it was one of only eleven such medals ever presented.

She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth S. D. Halle of Dallas, TX, and Dr. Sarah B. Dougherty of Morristown; a son-in-law, Andrew P. Halle, also of Dallas, TX; a brother, Paul N. Sutro of Carbondale, CO; and two grandchildren, William N. Halle of Washington, D.C., and Katharine W. Halle of Surbiton, Surrey, England.

A service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Morristown on June 17th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, NJ, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in New York.
