Aaron Thal Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

THAL, Aaron of Atlanta, GA passed away on October 29 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, where he and his family have a summer home. He was born on July 4, 1920 in Dayton, OH and was the youngest of three sons of Joseph and Pearl Thal. He attended school in Dayton, OH and went on to graduate from Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. He then went on to Union College until World War II began, at which time he joined the Army Air Corps. When the war concluded, Aaron went to Atlanta, GA and became the owner/operator of the JP Allen Store there. The Thal Co. owned women's specialty stores throughout the eastern part of the country. He was well respected in the business community and sponsored many charitable events. He had an enormous fashion sense not only for his own wardrobe, but most especially for his customers. He and his wife were active in many of Atlanta's social events. During the Christmas holiday season, no merchandise was displayed in any of the JP Allen store windows – only holiday greetings to all. Mr. Thal married his wife, Nancy Braunfield, in October of 1958. She survives him along with their loving daughter Amy Thal, New York; stepdaughter, Marcy Ford, Atlanta; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Meg Roop, of blessed memory. A private graveside service will be held at Arlington Memorial Park. The memorial service will be held at a later date at The Temple in Atlanta. Dearest Nancy and Amy,
Aaron meant the world to my Dad, to Judy and to all of our family. The happy times that the four of you spent together over the years, and the Daddy-daughter trips that we had growing up are among our most treasured memories. We all loved Aaron so much.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Amy at this time.

With much love, Washington Falk, Jennifer and Terry Weiss and Julie Falk Cleary

I only knew Mr. Thal by occasional handshake but it is sad to see the passing of this icon who brought such sophisticated and timeless taste to Atlanta.

Thal was a major factor in creating and delivering the definition of fashion for our young and formative city. He, while enormously venerated in the industry, might not have been totally known to every man on the street, but everyone benefited from his sense of style - none moreso than did his competitors.

His community service and charitable generosity, which included providing in-store space for the Atlanta Symphony box office, are not forgotten and exemplified a standard of civic sedaka which continues to this day.
