Cody Bryan Obituary

News Death Notice

BRYAN, Cody L. SGT of Kettering, OH, 22 years old, U.S. Army stationed at Fort Carson, CO passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 14th, 2011 from complications after surgery for an injury he sustained while in Iraq on his 2nd tour. He was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment, Gulf Company. He was a combat veteran with two tours in Iraq. He was a proud member of the "Pacesetters" whose motto is "Duty First, Iron Strong" which described Cody perfectly. Cody was the Companies "Go-To" man who never failed to complete his missions. He was a consummate warrior and a protector of the weak. Cody was born November 13, 1988 in Dayton, Ohio and graduated in 2007 from Kettering Fairmont High School. Cody is survived by his wife Megan (Moore) and two wonderful children; his daughter Kaydence, and his son Ian, with a baby boy Tanner due in two months. Cody grew up in Kettering with parents Rick and Raelynn and sisters Brittany and Rachel. His mother Debi (Smith) and sister Devin live in Nebraska. Cody's gift of sharing laughter with those around him will be missed by those who knew and loved him each and every day. His strength and courage is something everyone should strive for. He was looking forward to an honorable discharge from the Army so he could study counseling and continue to help others. He was the best son a Mom and Dad could have, a helping brother, a strong man, a giving husband, a loving father, and the greatest friend a person could have. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2011 at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME - FAR HILLS CHAPEL, 5471 Far Hills Ave. Dayton, Ohio 45429, with the funeral service and military honors at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Megan for their children. I am sorry for your loss. May this promise help you through your grief:(Isaiah 2:4) . . ."And he will certainly render judgment among the nations and set matters straight respecting many peoples. And they will have to beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore."

I feel I must tell you that as a Patriot Guard Rider you never get used to funerals. They get to all of us and the reason for the dark sun glass that many of us wear while standing a flag line and even after dark. The funeral for Cody was a difficult one from the moment the plane landed till we left the visitation the next day after our "final salute". I have attended my share of funerals and we will all remember Cody in the years to come. I know I speak for the rest of the PGR when I wish your family the strength that you will need to get through this trying time. Take comfort in knowing that we will also never forget him and will be there should you ever need us.

I posted earlier and have read some of the posts that were written in Cody's honor. From the posts they describe Cody's characteristics and personality so very similar to my late husbands. So although I never knew him personally, I feel like I did. My husband was all the time joking and playing pranks. He just wanted others to smile and stayed a kid at heart all though he turned out to be a fantastic Dad. Megan I wish I could talk to you to offer you support in your time of need and listen if that is what you need or give you a few kind words if it would make you fell better if only for a little while and help you face the days ahead. I could not be selfish enough to ask my husband to try to suffer another day for me. I was Thankful his suffering had ended although he was the love of my life and always will be, he will forever be in my heart. Sometimes I see things that I think is a message from him that things will be okay. Lord, I know you are going through a tremendous amount of pain but still feel like I need to offer you this advice. Sometimes when we lose a spouse we punish ourselves for still being on this earth so we out of respect for our loved ones don't want to be happy and enjoy what time we have left. Please do not do that. Put yourself in Cody's place.....had you passed before him would you want him to suffer your passing day after day. I don't think so. You would want him to be happy and enjoy life with your kids and that is going to be one of the hardest things you will have to do. You just like in my case can look at your children and see their father in them. That is a blessing. I am guessing but from the pictures I have seen your children are young. Mine were teenagers and it has effected them drastically. In my eyes Cody was a hero and his children one day will be so proud of him for the person and father he was. With the Lord behind you and His arms around you, you will be able to face the days ahead. I know personally that I have prayed for strength to just get through another day and He has given me that strength and I pray He will give it to you also. [email protected] if you just need anyone to talk too.

I will always remember Cody from ice hockey as a good and respectful kid with a kind heart.

Those we love must someday pass beyond our present sight. They must leave us, and the world we know, without their radiant light. We know that like a glowing star, their lovely light will shine, to brighten up another place, more perfect...more Divine. Even as the sun goes down to end the light of day, its rising on a new horizon somewhere far away. And though our world seems darker for the loss of one we miss, our loved ones life is dawning in a brighter world than this.

The family of Cody are all in my prayers. I did not know Cody, or know any of you, but I was aboard the Delta flight Monday morning that brought him part of the way home. Ironically I was flying from a weekend business convention that pays tribute to our free enterprise system, our freedoms, and all of our military personel. I know that freedom is not free, and Cody and his family have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Megan, it was silent on the place that morning as all who boarded and found their seats realized that we would all be flying with a TRUE HERO... I silently prayed for you while I watched the salute from the plane window and I've been praying for you and your family ever since. Please know that he was greatly honored by all from the plane window after you and your family were escorted off the plane in Atlanta. We watched in silence with tears in our eyes, and I'm sure all aboard were truly thankful for our freedoms. I sincerely thank you for being the wife of a great service man who fought for our countries freedom. I was honored to be a part of that flight that morning. Words cannot express my deep grattitude for Cody's service. God Bless you, your children, your baby on the way, and all the family and friends of this great, great young man.

October 25, 2011

To the Bryan family - We did not know you well, but remember
Cody from baseball and football, as he was the same age as our Kevin. You (parents) were always such hard workers for your kids - mom working 2 jobs @ Applebees and ? the base. This heartbreaking news reached me in New York just prior to an overseas flight...I have spent the last 2 1/2 years teaching young Soldiers like Cody how to access information they can use when deployed to places like Iraq and Afghanistan, and have had the chance to experience first-hand the incredible dedication and bravery and commitment made by Soldiers like Cody. We all owe Cody our gratitude and our respect. Cody and his family will be in my prayers. Bill Setchell

October 25, 2011

To Cody's wife, children, family, and friends, i am truly sorry for your loss and can still hardly believe that Cody has passed. I got to play a number of fun hockey seasons with Cody. I always looked up to him because he was one of the older kids on the team and always led by example. He was a funny, ambiguous kid who enjoyed playing a hard game of puck with his teammates. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who knew Cody and also to the rest of our brave soldiers fighting to help protect our freedom. Thank you for everything Cody, your spirit will live on. MT

Mother of a Soldier

Pride of heart, hope and fear
All for the child once so near,
Child no more, but ACU's?
Not the life that she would choose.
Mother of a Soldier please understand
The child you raised is now a man.
Patriot Soldier, dirt and dust
His path is clear, the cause is just.
Hold onto the child,
embrace the man
A mother's love it can withstand.
A swell of pride keeps her strong
He's been her child all along.

As a fellow resident of Kettering, it hits me hard whenever any soldier gets injured or fatality happens.
My prayers go to Mr.Cody L. Bryan and all his family members.
May God keep Cody with him and help his family and friends.

To my cousin megan and her children and cody's family... This was a shock to everybody. I think about how everybody is dealing with this all day and night. Cody was a very good guy and served our country proud and was a great husband, son, and father. It truly breaks my heart that he had to go. Megan I love you so much girl and I am so sorry that you and your family have to go through this. Love you

Do not remember me for how my life was taken, remember me for how my life was lived. Do not say my name and think of hatred and revenge. Say my name and think of my love within. Though you may miss me more at this time each year. Close your eyes and feel me near. I am with you in the silence when you try to wonder why. I am the strength that carries you throughout the day. I am the one in your heart telling you it's okay. I am there to listen, whatever you have to say. I am there to lay with you to keep you safe throughout the night. I am the sun that tells you to wake up and face another day. I am the wind against your face pushing you towards the right way. I am the first star you see every night, my love you can see shining bright. My love for you will live on, please be strong and carry on. We miss you Cody.

I pray God Keep You in His Care and give you the strength to face the days ahead. I can sort of relate to what agonizing pain you must be going through. I lost my Father, Mother, and Husband in one year. They were not sudden deaths and my children and I will never be the same people we were. So when I say my heart bleeds for you it is sincere. Also My daughter-in-law is in the military and has been deployed twice. She has two granddaughters of mine. It was so heartbreaking for her when she had to deploy the last time and my first granddaughter was only 16 months old and she missed the first Christmas when my granddaughter was actually old enough to realize what it was all about. We just talked yesterday and she is looking at being deployed again and she will miss my second granddaughter's first birthday. The baby is just two months old but it has already started laying heavily on her heart. I didn't personally know Cody and that is why I choose to write all this. Most people can not comprehend all the sacrifices a member of the military and their families make in order to serve their country, keep us safe, protect out freedom and some give all. You have no choice but to grieve when you lose a loved one. What has worked for me is to just imagine that they have made a trip ahead of me. It could be California or Florida but this time it is Heaven and they are just waiting for me to make that trip to join them. Then one day I said to myself, you have to quit grieving their death, there was so much more to them than the day they died and it's time you started celebrating their lives. There was more wonderful memories than just that day. Cody's family will be in my heart and prayers. Cody even though I didn't know you personally, I thank you for all you gave and honor you and all the soldiers and their families for the sacrifices they endure everyday for me and my loved ones. God Bless You Always!
