I had the pleasure of meeting Doug when I was preping our bus about 2 weeks prior to the race. I was introduced to him when he asked for help to unload some supplies he used to paint his bus. From that point on I saw him several times at the track and could'nt resist shooting the breeze with him learning several things about his life. He told me about his Mickey Mouse collection and how he had to have his "mouse ears" on his bus. He also helped me find my wifes wedding ring that she lost while helping me paint our bus. My Wife, Mother-in-law, Father, Step-mom and kids all had the opportunity to meet Doug while helping me with my bus and all have a story to tell about him from the little time we spoke with him. My family would like to send our prayers and condolences to the Cox family and Doug will always be in our thoughts.

I am Doug's niece, and God-daughter. In thinking about Doug's death, I have to find comfort knowing that he died doing what he loved. I think the Doug I will remember is the one who was always up waiting for two highschool girls who were late coming back from a football game...that terrifying look he had, but somehow...under it...THE GRIN. Now that I am an adult and a parent, I know his magic well...he was a dad when mine was not there, and he will always have a place as "dad" in my heart. I love you all and will pray for you in the weeks to come...what a huge loss, words just don't suffice.

What a great loss. Doug is an inspiration and one of a kind. Great teacher, patient mentor, compassionate friend ...a man who did not know the meaning of giving up. It was a pleasure working with him and knowing him. My prayers are with his family.

What a shock to get a call from our mutual friend Bob Galloway - saying that Doug had been killed Friday night. We all had been high school friends at Fairmont High School in Kettering and after we moved to Florida in the 1970's we didn't see as much of Doug. Missed him at all the Fairmont HS Reunions! Please forward our condolences to Sandy and their family as well as Doug's sister Mary. He will be missed. Gary and Pat Feverston

I am Doug's nephew (Sandy's sister's son) and have only wonderful and memorable times that I remember about Doug. Whether it was when I was a little boy and scared to death of him for no reason; or the time he tried to beach himself on his water skis...my memories abound. I will not be able to get to Dayton for the funeral as I have recently started a new job; but I can only imagine what his family is experiencing and they are in my prayers. I will always remember his grin that let you KNOW he was up to something.

I just meet Doug about two weeks ago while painting my school bus. Doug was full of great stories and would actually talk my ear off to the point that I told him that we should get back to painting our buses. Doug was very excited to take part in the school bus race and was over joyed that his granddaughter was able to come out and put her painted hand print on his bus. Friday, 8/26/05, will always be remebered by many and forgotten by few. Doug is now in a better place and is now looking down on his beloved family and friends.
