James Agee Obituary

AGEE, JAMES "ROGER"

On Tuesday, August 27, 2024, James "Roger" Agee passed from the loving care of his devoted family into the arms of Jesus, his Savior. Roger was born October 23, 1938, in Menifee County, Kentucky, to Arlie and Bertha Agee. He graduated from Camargo High School in 1956, subsequently serving his country in the National Guard. Roger married his high school sweetheart, Alene Huff, April 19, 1958. After moving to Ohio in 1961, he was employed with AK Steel, retiring in 1999. In November 1968, Roger accepted Jesus as his Savior while attending a service at Grand Avenue Church of God. He and Alene's positive impact have been felt not only in the congregations they attended, but across the entire Church of God movement and beyond. Roger ministered to underprivileged children, visited shut ins, the downhearted, and discouraged. Music was a big part of his ministry. Roger played the guitar and sang with a melodious Johnny Cash-like voice that remained steady and strong until very recently. His musical talent and creativity live on in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. For many years, Roger and Alene loved, supported, and served the ministry at Camp Lebanon Retreat Center near Lebanon, Ohio. Roger was a fan of western books and movies. His favorite western character was none other than Dodge City's own, Marshal Matt Dillon. In his younger days, Roger loved hunting ginseng and working with his father, Arlie, in the log woods of Eastern Kentucky. In later years, he played music, composed songs, and took enjoyment feeding his birds and squirrels. Preceding him in death were his parents Arlie and Bertha (Proffit) Agee; brothers, Chalmer (Willie) Agee, Willie Earl (Sylvia) Agee, Harold (Bea) Agee, David (Connie) Agee; one sister, Betty (Harold) Peyton; grandson, Jacob Agee; and granddaughter, Aleena Agee. Roger is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Alene (Huff) Agee; children, Bill (Jill) Agee, Sherrie (Bob) Downs, Gary (Lori) Agee, Tim (Sheila) Agee, and Bobby (Sara) Agee; eighteen grandchildren, Luke (Christy) Agee, LeeAnn (Chris) Johns, Kelsea (Mike) Wilburn, Lauren Agee, Timmy Agee, Ryan Agee, Shelby (Tyler) Frasher, Virginia (Johnny) Deaton, Logan Agee, Garrett Agee, Griffin Agee, Samuel Agee, Aaron Agee, Isabella Agee, Evan Agee, Addy Agee, Levi Agee and Gavin Agee; seven great grandchildren, Emma Martin, Daniel Agee, Payten Agee, Hayden Johns, Cory Martin, Jackson Johns, and Ariyah Agee. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 3, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Monroe First Church of God, 100 Easton Manor Drive, Monroe, Ohio, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 1:00 p.m., Rev. Gary Agee will be officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Roger's name may be made to Camp Lebanon Retreat Center, 4464 Emmons Road, Oregonia, Ohio 45054. Arrangements by Herr-Riggs Funeral Home, 210 S.
