John DIXON Obituary

News Death Notice

DIXON, Jr., John R. passed away August 31, 2013 after a short battle with cancer. He didn't lose this battle, he won because he never let the cancer or the diagnosis break his spirit. John was born November 11, 1952 and grew up in Bellbrook, graduating from Bellbrook High School in 1971. He later attended Wright State University. He married his wife, Vickie, in 1975. John lived his life with a fearless passion, embracing both the joys and challenges that every day brought to him. He lived his life by his own rules and those rules involved loving your family endlessly (and friends were always considered family), giving 110% to your work no matter what the task was, working tirelessly to help those less fortunate and finding joy and humor in every single day of your life. John always looked for ways to give back to those less fortunate and spent countless days and hours looking for ways to help make the world a better place, especially for the children and animals of this world. He was a sports fan and was devoted to his Cincinnati Redlegs and his Buckeyes, savoring the World Series and NCAA Championship titles. Many will remember John for his extensive automobile collection, known as the Taj Ma Garaj. John opened his collection to thousands of visitors over the years and was proud to share his passion with fellow enthusiasts. For all his passions in life, none was more dear to John's heart than his family. He cherished his role as a father and grandfather through the many years. He prided himself on taking an active part in the lives of his daughters and grandchildren, from being the Troop Dad of their Brownie Troops in the 1980s (at the time he was the only male troop leader in Indianapolis) to dancing a special dance with his daughters every year on their birthday to attending all of his grandchildren's school and sporting events, and reminding them all "Don't Stop Believing" and that "SLY- Somebody Loves You." John leaves behind his sweetheart of a wife, Vickie, his two daughters Hilary West (husband Phil) and Ashley Rohrbacher (husband John) as well as his special Dutch daughter Linda Nugter (husband Robert De Vries), three grandsons Gunnar, Koen and Jaap, two granddaughters Charlotte and Rory and a new grandchild coming in 2014. His sister Rebecca, brother Kenny and many cousins, nieces and nephews and hundreds of friends that John thought of as family will all celebrate John's life and honor his memory through their stories, laughter and tears. John was grateful for the care that Hospice of Dayton provided, particularly the comfort he received from Steve, "other" Steve, Brad, Rob, Nole, Melissa and the rest of the Crisis Care Team. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the John Dixon legacy fund at any Wright-Patt Credit Union. All of the money will go to further John's desire to brighten the lives of sick children in Dayton. John believed in education and the power of knowledge and chose to donate his body to Wright State University. The family will hold a Memorial Service at a later date.

I can't believe this. My good friend has passed. John placed faith in my untested abilities. John, thank you!

John was always a supportive friend to me personally, and a generous advocate for the Epilepsy Foundation. Through his hard work and commitment to the nonprofit world and helping others, he definitely left the world a better place.

In my last correspondence with John I had told him I was praying for a miracle, and his response was " We do need a miracle here, although, I think the transition is a miracle unto itself. " I am awed by his faith and the importance it played in his life.

I will miss you John. You were as interesting and unique as your museum and I'm sure you will enjoy the next realm just as much as you did playing in this one.

My condolences to the Dixon family. I am so sorry for your loss. May the many memories you have and the many friends that loved him, bring you comfort in your sadness.

I did not personally know John, nor have met him, but I volunteered last month with my brother Walter Chin and his wife Deniece during the fundraiser/tribute gathering at his garage while I was in town.

The gathering was to pay homage and respect with family, friends, and well-wishers to a beloved home-town favorite. John's legacy will live on - to those close to him and to the warm people of Ohio.

I was fortunate enough to have met many of his friends who loved him, and to have personally extended warm sympathies and contribute for a good cause.

Vickie and family, I heard of John's passing from Aunt Jewell, who called us in Knoxville. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. Your cousin, Debbie (Ross) Acuff

John was a giant idea man and such a gentleman. John always made time to talk with me and his words were always helpful. He would show up at the 2nd Street Market as we did the British car show there each year. He always had support for our endeavors and I was truly blessed to know him. My condolences go out to the family and I will miss him always and think of him frequently and what he provided for us all to appreciate. Thank you John for the time you graciously gave me.

Ashley, Hilary, and Vickie - as a dear friend said to me when my dad died: "spirit and purpose and friends and family will light the way." May you find these in abundance. I will certainly remember - forever - the graciousness of John and his love for his family. All of us here in Chicago are thinking of you with great care and tenderness.

I wish to express my condolences to the family. Words seem insufficient at this difficult time. Although nobody denies the certainty of death, we all need comfort in the reality of it. May you find real comfort and relief, and as a result, begin to recover gradually from the pain. Love from those around you will help you through the days ahead. The precious memories of your loved one will bring you comfort.

John was a giant of a man. I consider myself lucky to have met him. He welcomed Porsche enthusiasts to the Taj on numerous occasions and always challenged us to help his beloved Ronald McDonald House charity. Godspeed, John!

John was a busy man but always took time to say hello. Always a smile. Had cars worth a lot of money but would come outside and admire my low buck custom car or bike. So sad I won't be seeing him anymore. He was a good man and Father. I hope he meets my parents in Heaven. Dad was a car nut too.

What a great man...We were in need of a judge for the first FOP car show. John said let me check and without hesitation he was right there. Thank you for being such a fun person (paid him with a hamburger lol)
