Katherine Ullmer Obituary

Ullmer, Katherine L. "Kitty"

Ullmer, Katherine "Kitty" L., age 77, passed away Wednesday, September 17,2024. Kitty was born November 1,1946 to the late Kames and Irene (Reiss) Ullmer. A graduate and band member of Fairview High School in 1964, she went on to study at The Ohio State University where she was part of Phi Bata Kappa. Kitty later went on to earn 2 master's degrees from the University of Colorado. Her love of learning carried over and she became a teacher in Germany. Kitty went on to become a feature writer for Cox Media Group for over 40 years. Her love of writing was evident at the Centerville Rotary Club where she was the recording secretary for their newspaper.

Kitty was a huge Red's fan as well as an Elvis fan. She had a passion for traveling that took her from Hawaii, Europe and even New York City. Kitty's personable nature allowed her to become friends with anyone as she loved to talk to people. Her greatest love was family; particularly, her nieces and nephews and she loved to show them off by taking them to special events.

Left to cherish her memory is her brother, Jim (Mantha) Ullmer; sister, Stephanie (Dennis) McNeary and numerous nieces and nephews. Private services will be held for family members only. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be made at www.routsong.com.

Kitty and I used to walk home together down Campus Drive from Cornell Heights Elementary School; she lived on Wesleyan, one street over from me. We lost touch at Fairview, probably because we didn't share any classes. I started to read the Dayton Daily News (on-line) in 2001 and emailed a "Katherine Ulmer" columnist inquiring if she was any relation to Kitty Ulmer who I'd gone to school with.
To my surprise it was Kitty! We corresponded back and forth for a couple years about various things including our Dayton families and Germany since I'd been there a couple times. After recounting my adventures at the 1999 Reunion, I tried unsuccessfully to convince her to attend the 2004 Reunion and we gradually fell out of touch again.
