Lorine REID Obituary

REID, Lorine M. Lorine M. Reid passed away on Sept 2, 2017. She received A Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theater and TV from Wayne State Univ. in Toledo. She received a Masters Degree in Psychiatric Social Work from the Univ. of Michigan. She wrote her thesis on "The Use of Drama in Social Work." She began her social work career as a case worker for the Children's Aid Society in Detroit. In 1964 Lorine developed a program to keep unwed mothers in school. The Pilot program was for the Highland Park School District. A year later it became a permanent program. Two years later the Detroit school system adopted it It went nationwide. It was the first program of its kind in the country. She graduated from the Univ of Toledo College of Law in 1969. She was the only female in her class of 150 graduates. She moved to Dayton in 1973 to become the Chief Planner for the federally- funded Pilot Cities Criminal Justice Program. In 1984 she received the Citizens Award for Mental Health from the State of Ohio for her work with the citizen board of the Dayton Mental Health Center. Lorine went into private practice in Dayton, specializing in family law and employment discrimination. She was one of the first women who practiced law in Montgomery County. She practiced in the law office of Mary K. C. Soter. She worked for the Montgomery County Prosecuting Attorney in the Appellate Division. She was proud of her record of never losing an appeal at the Ohio Supreme Court. She then worked in the prosecutor's office in the Child Support Enforcement division. She was an active member of Altrusa. She was club president from 1985 to 1987. She was instrumental in securing 501(C)(3) status for the club in 2005. She was involved with the League of Women Voters starting in 1975. She served as their secretary from 2006 to 2010. She was active with the Grafton Hills Neighborhood Assoc. Lorine saw herself as controversial. She said she was ahead of her time. When she saw a need she jumped in and took action. There are many communities that are better places and many individuals who have a better life because of her determination to take action. Lorine donated her body to the Anatomical Gift Program of Wright State School of Medicine.
