Paul Hemmeter Obituary

Hemmeter, Paul Anthony

Paul A. Hemmeter, 84, formerly of Dayton, Beavercreek, and Delaware, Ohio, passed away on September 29, 2024, from advanced Parkinson's disease. Born on November 7, 1939, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late George and Mary Hemmeter, Paul graduated from the Ohio State University with a Master's degree in English. After graduation, he wrote for the Dayton Daily News, covering the police and fire beat, where he found his true profession and passion: firefighting. From 1967 until 1992, Paul had a distinguished career in the Dayton Fire Department, rising through the ranks to become a District Chief. After retiring from the Dayton department, he served as chief of the Beavercreek Township Fire Department. After seven years at Beavercreek, Paul retired permanently to spend time writing for himself and various firefighting publications, reading, birding with his wife, and enjoying his grandchildren, teaching them to appreciate good books, classical music, and a mean game of euchre.

Paul is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years Alice Ann Fair Hemmeter and his children Kathleen (John) Hickey, Sam (Sara) Hemmeter, Marianne Hemmeter (Joe Schmansky), and Mike (Bev) Hemmeter. He is also survived by his grandchildren Claire (Michael) Smithhisler; Maura and Jack Hickey; Grace, Holly, and George Hemmeter; Thomas and Kate Schmansky; and Evan and Sophia Hemmeter. Paul was predeceased in death by his sister Terri but is survived by his other siblings Dave, Mary Ellen, Marge, Tom, and Joe Hemmeter. He also leaves behind numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday October 11, 2024, at The Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center 101 Valleyside Dr. Delaware, Ohio. Following calling hours, Fr. Toner from St. Mary Catholic Church will conduct a short memorial service. Directly after the service, all are welcome to attend a luncheon in the community room at the funeral home.

The family thanks Ohio Health Hospice, especially Heidi and Sue, for Paul's care during his final day.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send a donation to the Parkinson's Foundation at www.parkinson.org.
