Robert Snyder Obituary

News Death Notice

SNYDER, Robert B. 73, of Sarasota, FL died December 10, 2010. Born on September 11, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio. The only child of the late Robert L. and Anna Marie Schank Snyder. He is survived by his loving companion Nancy Phillips. For many years he resided in University Park, Florida. Rob graduated from Fairmont High School in Kettering, Ohio, and earned his graduate degree from Ohio University. For many years he served as a volunteer fire fighter for Kettering After serving in the U.S. Army, Rob earned his "wings" and began his lifelong career as a commercial pilot, flying for many years in the Hawaiian Islands. Even in retirement he referred to himself as "Captain Rob". He never lost his love of flying, hence he traveled from one end of the world to another. Once a pilot, always a pilot! Former member of the Board of Trustees of Grandview Hospital. Past President and Treasurer of the Southern Hills Lions Club. He was a member of the "Quiet Birdmen" known to most pilots around the world, member of the Millennium Masonic Lodge #779, Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton and the Antioch Temple Shrine. Rob was responsible for a generous donation that helped launch "Little Kids Rock Across America" sponsored by the Dr. Phil Foundation. The initiative brings free, innovative music education to over 27,000 school children in ten cities across the country. In economically challenged times for the public schools across the nation, children are able to express themselves in a positive way. His greatest joy was traveling to the participating cities to witness the joy of the youngsters and their dedicated teachers. He was a devoted communicant of the First Presbyterian Church of Sarasota, Florida. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Church, 2050 Oak Street, Sarasota, Florida 34237. A poem written by Rob for a fellow "Quiet Birdman". No longer flying skies of blue. Death has moved my point of view. From metal wings I am now free. To see my sky from infinity. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 10:00 AM on Friday. Interment following service at the Sarasota VA National Cemetery. Arrangements by Toale Brothers Funeral Home.

Dear Nancy, Thinking and praying for you during this difficult time. Rob ( "The Captain" ) was a top notch guy. I really enjoyed it when he stopped in at my shop. I am so thankful that our paths crossed one last time. We had a good visit and I was treated to more of his adventures. You were very good for him and I am glad , he deserved someone like you. Rest in peace Captain Rob.
