Walter BALSTER Obituary
News Death Notice
BALSTER, Walter John Age 82, Dayton. Born September 1, 1933 in Carthagena, Ohio to the late Joseph and Clara (Kremer) Balster, died Sunday, August 7, 2016 in Kettering, Ohio. Walter was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. He began his thirty year teaching career in St. Henry, Ohio where he taught math at St. Henry High School, went on to Fairmont West High School, and then retired from Oakwood High School. He also taught at the University of Dayton and Sinclair Community College. Walter received his Master's in Education at The Ohio State University. After his teaching career, Walter became an aviation fuels researcher at Wright Patterson Air Force Base; there he contracted with Systems Research Laboratories and Innovative Scientific Solutions, Incorporated. Walter is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn, and their children: Dr. Gary (Anne) Balster, Patrick (Lisa) Balster, Brenda (Richard) Hilinski, Barbara (Dan) Ulrich, and Lori (James)Tarkany Balster, thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild, sisters; Esther (Jim) Moeller, Mary (Conrad) Phlipot, and Clara Walter, brother Larry (Pat) Balster, and sister-in-law Alice Balster. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, a stillborn daughter, brother Richard Balster, and brother-in-law John Walter. Family will receive friends Wednesday, August 10, 2016 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME-Far Hills Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12 NOON Thursday, at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church 3033 Far Hills Ave. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Blaster made a great impression on me my fist year of high school at St. Henry. I was struggling with understanding negative numbers, until Wally talked about playing pinochle and going back. Something cliched, and math became my favorite subjects after that day.

Lori, we are so sad to hear of your father's passing. I recall your dad and balsam wood as part of our Odyssey of the Mind project years ago. Sending you and your family our deepest sympathies. May you find peace at this difficult time.
P.S. Thank you for sharing the beautiful family pictures. I enjoyed seeing pictures of your dad when he was young and the pictures of your family through the years.

So sad to hear about Walt.Whenever I had a problem with a car or motorcycle I would walk across the street and ask if "Walt could come out and play".The man was a genius! He will be missed.
