Phyllis Emma Baak was born May 8, 1924 on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa the daughter of Fred and Elsie Neddermeyer Kunze. She died Sunday, March 18, 2007 at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa at the age of eighty-two surrounded by several of her children and grandchildren. Phyllis was baptized May 29, 1924 by Pastor Amstein and confirmed on April 10, 1938 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.
Phyllis received her education at St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak. She married Wilbur Gloede on June 10, 1942 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak and were blessed with five children. Wilbur passed away October 11, 1954. She married Edward Baak on February 8, 1957 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig by Pastor Wiese. Edward brought into the marriage two of his own children that Phyllis welcomed with open arms. Ed and Phyllis were blessed with two children. Edward died on October 28, 1998.
Phyllis worked as a secretary at Baak Implement for many years. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Phyllis was a loving Mother. She loved to spend her time baking, gardening, quilting and raising St. Bernards. The couple enjoyed traveling, and Phyllis was always excited about trips to Lake Okoboji. Ed and Phyllis enjoyed doing wood crafts and redoing furniture.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Elsie Kunze; her first husband, Wilbur Gloede; brothers Fred Jr. and Lawrence Kunze; her second husband, Edward Baak; one daughter, Maureen Petersen; and one grandson, Scott Gloede.
Survivors include: eight children, Ron Gloede and wife, Judy of Charter Oak/Huxley; Kathleen Schau and husband, Irv of Cedar Rapids; Roger (Butch) Gloede and wife, Tracey of McCook Lake, South Dakota; Drene (Tina) Briggle and husband, Paul of Ricketts; Allen (Bud) Gloede of Ricketts; Randy Gloede of Las Vegas, Nevada; Pam Tripp and husband, Tony of Charter Oak; Tami Baak and Kevin Wanek of Shorewood, Wisconsin; son-in-law, Larry Petersen of Charter Oak. Twenty grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law, Esther Hanemann and husband, Raymond of Oregon City, Oregon; Elvera Carlyle and her husband, Jack of Rapid City, South Dakota; UnaBell Frehse and husband, Harold of Denison; Darlene Saunders of Denison; and Bernice Kunze of Sioux City; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 23, 2007, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the services and graveside rites held at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Organist Shirley Stull provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Just As I Am, Without One Plea," "I'm But a Strange Here," and "Go, My Children." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Tracy Gloede-Hugee, Robin Petersen, Andrea Gloede, Desiree Tripp, Selena Schmeid,Vickie Ellwein, Gina Gloede, Lisa Gloede, and Kim Meyer. Those serving as pallbearers were Dean Petersen, Markus Reed, Darin Gloede, Greg Gloede, Justin Tripp, Jake Schneider, Eric Schneider, Rockey Hugee, Chad Gloede, Neal Gloede, and Chris Schau. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
