HAROLD INSKIP Obituary

Harold K. Inskip

"Skip"

Age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away on January 30, 2010. He was born in Buffalo, NY, the son of Howard A. Inskip and Isabella Jane (Kirkwood) Inskip.

After graduating from Kenmore High School in Kenmore, NY, Mr. Inskip attended Yale College, where he swam for the national champion varsity team and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1945. He joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves and saw active duty from 1943 until 1946, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of first lieutenant.

Skip returned to Yale University for graduate study from 1946 to 1950, earning a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1952. While at Yale he met another graduate student, Lois Wiley of Ossining, New York (Wellesley 1947). They were married on December 17, 1949. From 1950 to 1952, Skip taught organic chemistry and did post-doctoral study at the University of Illinois with the eminent polymer chemist, Dr. Carl S. Marvel. Mr. Inskip worked as a polymer chemist for the DuPont Company from 1952 until his retirement in 1985. Never boastful, he was good at what he did. Several company patents were registered in his name. He played golf from his teens to his eighties and made two holes in one. He could read a lake to find the fish and had great card sense at poker and bridge. He enjoyed his vegetable garden and made it productive despite the deer, raccoons, and Japanese beetles. Skip made many lasting friendships at DuPont, as he had earlier in high school, Yale and the University of Illinois. His friends and extended family were important to him all his life.

Lois, Skip's wife of 53 years, died at their home on March 20, 2002. Skip is survived by a brother, Kenneth A. Inskip, of St. Louis, MO; three children, Gregory A. Inskip and his wife, Betty Collins Inskip, of Kennett Square, PA; Peter D. Inskip of Rockville, MD; Elizabeth I. McCombs and her husband, Maxwell E. McCombs, of Austin, TX; four grandchildren, Louisa K. Inskip, Robert G. Inskip, Maxwell I. McCombs, and Samuel E. McCombs; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Inskip's wishes were that there be no memorial service or funeral and that any memorial contributions be made to the charity of the giver's choice.
