He attended Christ Our King School, Wilmington, graduated from Salesianum School in 1958, and attended LaSalle College, Philadelphia, PA. In 1959, he entered the Oblate Novitiate, made his first profession of vows in 1960, and earned a bachelor of arts in history from Niagara University and a master of arts in political science from Villanova University. He completed his studies for the priesthood at DeSales Hall School of Theology, Hyattsville, MD, and ordained to the priesthood on October 26, 1968, at the Cathedral of Sts. "Father Hurley was a man committed to Catholic social teaching with a deep devotion," Rev. James J. Greenfield, O.S.F.S., Oblate provincial said. "From his ministry as a teacher, missionary, Father Hurley sought to ensure that the dignity of all people was both honored and advanced. As a national leader in the Model United Nations program, he ensured that young people learned the essential value of solidarity with our brothers and sisters throughout the world."

Father introduced the Model United Nations program to many school systems in the East. He coached many Model U.N. National Championship Teams: Archbishop Wood, Northeast Catholic, and Father Judge High schools, Philadelphia; Salesianum School and Padua Academy, Wilmington; Bishop Ireton High School, Alexandria; and Father Lopez High School, Daytona Beach. Was saddened to learn of Father Hurley's passing through our alumni newsletter. "J.J.", as he was affectionately known, taught us respect for all peoples. The exposure to other cultures afforded to us through the Model U.N. simulations proved invaluable. He was, "truly one of the finest teachers that any of us had the pleasure to learn from". N.E.C.H. I have so many fond memories of Father Hurley while at Bishop Ireton. He was always the champion of the freshman class (the underdogs) and was fondly known to all as Din-Din, as he would always walk through the freshman lunch period and ask for bite of your candy bar. Rest in peace Din-Din.

Father Hurley was a wonderful friend and priest to our family. He taught both of our sons at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Va. Our son Henry, was on the model UN team that won the champainship at the Haig in Holland. He was a big influence on the life of our sons and helped to make them the men they are today.
He also performed the sacrament of marriage for four of our children. Our son Henry and daughter in law Jan were married in Fairfax Staion, Va. Ten years ago this week he came to Montana for our daughter Adele and son in law Jeff's wedding.
He will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace Father Hurley. We will miss you.

I have so many great memories of being in Father Hurleys classes! He was truly gifted with the way he made us laugh and really want to listen and learn from him. Some teachers fade from our memories but not Father Hurley. He was an original and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Keep making people laugh in heaven and rest in the peace of our dear Jesus Christ.

Father Hurley had a very positive influence on My son Bill Sieber through model UN and of course "Hurley Ball" Bill is now going on to a career as an economic foreign service officer for the state dept. I am sure there are many many more good men and woman that father Hurley touched though out his life. Father Hurley was truly a man that made a difference.

Fr. Hurley was a favorite at North Catholic. He helped the kids of what was the great school of all the blue collar neighborhoods that made up the real "Tradition Like none Other"! Father you truly did fit right in, your humor and guidance was very much appreciated. As we were taught by the Oblate Priest that the lesson of St.Francis De Salle; you don't need to do great things, but do the little things in life well. Fr. Hurley we thank you for teaching us so very well about life. Live Jesus!
