Paul Gerding Obituary

Paul R. Gerding, 74, of Newark, DE and Middlebury, VT, beloved husband of Sally C. Holland and father of Aaron P. Gerding and Margie A. Rothermich, both of Northampton, MA, died March 22nd in Newark DE.
Paul was a pioneer: he made an original discovery in nuclear physics while studying for his PhD, and, with a partner, developed the software for the first CT scan ever done in the United States. His career in information technology was marked by his technical expertise, innovation and an exceptional ability to identify and resolve even the subtlest inconsistencies in software. He was especially skilled as both a manager and a programmer at collaborating with end-users to achieve their goals. Paul also was greatly admired for his integrity and caring for others; he treated everyone with dignity and respect.
Paul was an accomplished, juried photographer whose work explored delicate symmetries in nature and was shown in several galleries. He had a deep interest in mathematics, especially computational geometry and the foundations of mathematical analysis; he was also an avid linguist. In addition to his scientific and artistic talents, Paul had a mechanical genius that enabled him to fix just about anything. He had a wonderful sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
Paul is cherished by his family and friends as the most gentle, lovable, honorable, loving and honoring of men. He always will be loved and deeply and profoundly missed.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Paul's memory to a charity that addresses hunger or homelessness. To express an online condolence please visit www.strano-feeley.com

Our condolances Sally on the passing of Paul. While I only met Paul a handful of times while you and I worked together at Middlebury, I enjoyed those visits. I know it has been a difficult journey, but also a rewarding one. Let us know if we can be of help.

Sally and Family,

I was saddened to hear of Paul's passing. I remember so well our early days in Computing & EDAD at NMH. I worked closely with the Computer Center back then. I remember our days when you were Director of the Campaign.
The memories we have! I so remember the year the computer center flooded just before Reunion...

I will always remember Paul's wit and humor -- I am so glad I had the chance to work with him and know him. He will be missed -- he was a brilliant man and a great friend.

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with all of you in the days ahead.
