Retired Educator and Coach
Mr. Paul Andrew Weldin, age 68, of Newark, DE, died on Tuesday, May 5, 2009.
Mr. Weldin was born in Wilmington, DE, on June 8, 1940, son of the late Grant U. Weldin and Rae Argianello Weldin. He was a graduate of the University of Delaware and later earned his master's degree from Glassboro State College. A talented and devoted educator throughout his career, he retired from George Read Middle School in 2002 after 39 ½ years of service in the Colonial and Laurel School Districts. He also served as an adjunct instructor at Wilmington University for 9 years. Among his professional affiliations, he was a member of the Colonial Education Association, the Delaware State Education Association, and the Delaware Retired Teachers Association. Active in his community, he shared his love of sports with local youth as a football coach for Laurel High School and George Read Middle School. He also coached baseball in the Newark National Little League and softball in both the Suburban and the Midway Little Leagues. He officiated for many years at local basketball, swimming, and softball competitions. Mr. Weldin was an enthusiastic athlete in his own right and particularly enjoyed playing golf and racquetball. He was a longtime member of the Kirkwood Fitness Club, the Delaware Amateur Racquetball Association (DARA), and the USA Racquetball Association. He also served as a board member of the "Green and White Club" at Tower Hill School for 6 years and was a member of the Newark Country Club. In his rare leisure hours, Mr. Weldin greatly enjoyed collecting baseball cards and spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Jane Keller Weldin; children, Kathleen M. Cronin and husband, Robert, of Elizabethtown, PA; and Mark A. Weldin of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Ethan Cronin and Tessa Cronin; brothers, William B. Weldin of Georgia; and John C. Weldin of Virginia; and cousin, Joseph Nuville of Virginia.
Friends may call 6-8 pm on Friday, May 8, 2009, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
