Roosevelt Burns Obituary

Apostle Roosevelt Burns

AGE: 90 • Bear

Apostle Roosevelt Burns, founder of the Church of Deliverance, Inc., a preacher, teacher, and author, transitioned to heaven on September 16, 2017, with his wife by his side. He was 90 years old and he served in Christian ministry for over 69 years. His teachings and books are filled with the word of God, showing people how to live and walk by faith through the word.

He was born in Lumberton, North Carolina on August 23, 1927, to the late Virginia Carlyle-Burns and Grady Burns. At the time of his death, he was the senior pastor of the Church of Deliverance in Bridgeton, NJ, which he founded and was the overseer of the Churches of Deliverance in Downingtown, PA. and in Reading, PA.

Apostle Burns was deeply devoted to his wife, to his family, and to the church. During his lifetime, he traveled from Maine to Florida, preaching the gospel to hundreds, bringing healing and deliverance to thousands through his radio ministry and through his literature.

In the late seventies, Apostle Burns became deathly ill. God raised Apostle Burns from his death bed and told him to teach His people the word to build their faith. Before God raised Apostle Burns from his death bed, he was only a preacher of the word of God. After God raised him up from his death bed, He told him to teach faith to his people. He went around the city of Wilmington, Delaware with a tent teaching people the word of God. Many laughed and thought the Church of Deliverance was a cult because he was teaching people to have faith in God's word and to only say what God's word says and people were used to the Pentecostal style preaching. When Apostle Burns started teaching faith, he had never heard of Kenneth E Hagin or Fred Price.

When Rollins Cablevision came to town, Apostle Burns was the first to minister on the network and his program was titled, Speak the Word Only.

Even while Apostle Burns evangelized and pastored churches, he managed to earn a Bachelor's degree in Biblical Studies from Trinity Bible College and Seminary in Evansville, IN, a Master's degree in Biblical Studies in Evangelism from Haylett College in Mansfield, OH, and a Doctorate degree in Biblical Theology from Florida State Christian University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He received an Honorary Doctorate in Psychology from Collegium Neotarianum Philosophiae in Kansas City, MO and his PH. D from International Christian University, Chesapeake, VA.

A homegoing service and celebration of life will be held at St. Paul UAME Church, 3114 N. Market St, Wilmington, DE, September 26, 2017, at 11 a.m. Visitation will begin Tuesday, September 26, 2017, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, send donations to Church of Deliverance, P. O. Box 672, Bridgeton, N.J. 08302.

Not sure what to say?

It was always an exciting time to hear that Bishop Dr. Roosevelt Burns would be visiting the CoD on 11 Street in Wilmington, De. That was 504 E. 11 Street.
Later, the icy on the cake was when he stayed and deposited into the group.
It was truly a blessing to have Bishop, Mother Lillian and Gran laboring in prayer with us, setting an example for us.
I will not forget when Bishop/Apostle R. Burns and Pastor apologizes to us when we had moved to the Complex on Govern Printz Blvd. telling us that he had taught us some wrong information and that they were sincere but sincerely wrong. That took a great deal of boldness.
Well. the Legacy of the Lord Jesus Christ is still moving forward.
Gran, Pastor Virginia Burns, is an icon too. I remember the sayings that I had never heard before hearing them from her. One, a fish is never caught until he opens his mouth. God is kind to us with the reminder the Christian race is not competitive but is one of endurance.
Bless the Lord Jesus,
Sister Dorothy King

Dear Precious Burns family,

How great Apostle Burns was. He is my father in the Lord. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior under his powerful ministry. He knew the Lord and walked close to him. It brings me great joy to speak of him. I enjoyed his teaching, preaching, and care for the saints. I know he is resting in peace. May God bless all of you and continue to keep you in perfect peace. Amen
