Samuel Leonard Pettit passed away peacefully with his children at his side on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at his home, Cokesbury Village, in Hockessin, DE. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Born in NY in 1928, he was a graduate of the South Kent School in CT and New York University. During the Korean Conflict, he served as a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force. In 1963, he moved with his family to Wilmington from their home in Princeton, NJ and started his career at Wilmington Trust Company as a trust officer. Mr. Pettit was one of the first people in DE to receive the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and served as the society's president. He was a member of the Wilmington Country Club, the Lincoln Club and was elected to membership into the Society of Colonial Wars in 1982. His passions were spending time with his beloved late wife, Sally, and their 3 children, sports, travel and the stock market.
Mr. Pettit is survived by his daughter, Sandra Pettit Durgin, and her husband, Chuck, and their children, Sam, Rebecca and Peter; as well as his son, James Dravo Pettit, and his wife, Stacie, and their children, Michael, Andrew and Elizabeth; and daughter, Helen "Mimi" Pettit, and her husband, Chris Botlinger, and her 2 children, Sally and Harry Rice, all of Wilmington. Also surviving are his brothers, Walter and Bill; as well as his sister, Mary Funk; and his twin sister, Barbara Finch, and their families.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Christiana Hundred on Tuesday, June 14, at 1 pm. Burial will be private.
