Steven Pruitt, Sr.

Wilmington - Steven Philip Pruitt Sr., age 72, passed away peacefully on November 19th, 2020 after battling cancer.

Born in Wilmington, DE, Steve was the son of the late Charles Granville Pruitt and Mae Pruitt. He grew up in Wilmington, and at the age of 18 he enlisted the United States Marine Corp. Serving in Vietnam from 1966 - 1967 he acquired the name "Devil Dog" for his duty as a tunnel rat. As a true Marine he often put himself in harm's way, clearing underground enemy tunnels for the safety of his platoon. In 1967 he was wounded and awarded with the Purple Heart medal upon his return. After Vietnam he was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where he met and married the love of his life, Maggie Siaca. They married in Puerto Rico on August 1st, 1970 and spent 50 wonderful years together.

After relocating back to Wilmington, Steve worked as a small engine mechanic at Angerstein's for 20 years and Rizzo Construction for another 16. Steve was a hard worker, always willing to help his family, coworkers and friends whenever they needed him. He was the best friend you could ever have.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Maggie Pruitt; his two sons, Steven Pruitt Jr. (Anya) and Chris Pruitt, and his grandson Chris Fortmuller. He is also survived by his two sisters, Judith Pruitt and Irene Silver (husband Richard), and his two brothers, Mark Pruitt (wife Karen), Robert Pruitt (wife Barbara). He has many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Steve is predeceased by three sisters and four brothers: Debbie Kopanski, Mary Uriani, Terry Rembecki, Donald Lawrence and Charles, John, and James Pruitt.

Steve was a loving father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, brother-in-law, and a wonderful husband. He enjoyed traveling every year to his Marine Reunion and hanging with his marine buddies. He loved fishing, crabbing, travelling, Philadelphia sports, and was just an all-around good guy who would give you the shirt off his back. He was loved by anybody who came in contact with him. He cherished time with his family in Delaware and loved taking trips to Florida to be with his in-laws. Steve loved the sunshine, ocean, and beaches, and was a person who enjoyed living life to the fullest. He will be truly missed and loved forever by his family and friends.

A committal service with military honors will be conducted in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701, at 1:00pm on Friday, April 16, 2021.
