Adam F. Andrews

Adam F. Andrews, D.D.S. Swarthmore Orthodontist Dr. Adam F. Andrews died on February 5, 2013 at Riddle Memorial Hospital as a result of heart failure. He was born Adam F. Andrewskiewicz in Ipswich, Mass., a coastal town north of Boston. Being raised in a predominantly Polish neighborhood caused him to be imbued with a strong sense of "Polishness". After graduating from Ipswich High School in 1948, he went to Philadelphia to live with his brother and sister-in law while he attended St. Joseph's University (then a "College") from 1948 through 1951. It was here that he met his brother's sister-in-law Helen, whom he married in 1952. He attended Dental School at the University of Pennsylvania from 1951 through 1955. Because of an existing draft law resulting from the Korean conflict, Dr. Andrews joined the U.S. Navy in 1955 and served 2 years as a dental officer with the 2nd Marine Air Wing at Cherry Point, N.C. From1957 to 1959, he attended the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania where he received his orthodontic specialty training. He also served as a part-time instructor in the crown and bridge department while studying to be an orthodontist. His private practice was located in Swarthmore. During his first 10 years of practice, Dr. Andrews was also on the staff of the Mouth Hygiene Clinic, a United Way service in Philadelphia that provided minimal cost orthodontics to low income families. He became a staff member of Hahnemann Hospital when it absorbed the Mouth Hygiene Clinic. He had been a member of the Rotary Club of Swarthmore, the Springhaven Golf Club, the University of Penn. Orthodontic Association, the Mid-Atlantic Orthodontic Society, and the American Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Andrews retired in Dec. of 1995. His favorite pastimes were golfing, playing bridge, and gardening. In 2007, Dr. and Mrs. Andrews moved to Riddle Village, a continuous care retirement community in Media, PA. He was preceded in death by sons David and Kevin. Survivors: his wife Helen (nee Grady), sons Stephen (Conni) of Plymouth Meeting, PA and Terrence of Scottsdale, AZ. The Funeral Mass: will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Friday, February 8th, St. John Chrysostom R.C. Church, 617 S. Providence Road (Rt. 252 South) in Wallingford, PA. Calling hours will be from 10:00 A.M to 11:00 A.M., at the Church. Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple.
