WORTHINGTON — Thomas J. Jones, of Powell, passed away at Kobacker House in Columbus, Monday, March 20, 2017 after a long and hard fought battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 2, 1938 he was the only child of the late Dean 0. Jones and Norma Lyons Jones. Tom graduated from South High School in 1956 and was a 1960 graduate of Ohio University where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
After serving in the military and reserves he went to work for the Shell Oil Co. working in Ohio, Michigan and Iowa. In 1969 he began employment with AAA and became Executive Vice President of the Ohio AAA Association in 1971. When the association merged with several Ohio clubs in 1978 he became President of the newly formed Ohio Automobile Club. He served as president until his retirement in 2002. During his time with AAA Tom served on many national committees.
He is a past member of Columbus Rotary and Worthington Chamber of Commerce and has volunteered with the Delaware Co. Red Cross and Grady Hospital. He was currently serving as Chairman of the Board of the Delaware Co. Transit.
Tom was the "go-to" guy of the family and there were only six words needed to describe him: "He just knew what to do." Whether it was a small problem, a family crisis or a tough decision to be made at work, he just knew what to do. He was always there, not just for the immediate family but always had time to mentor and lend support to numerous nieces, nephews and young friends of the family.
Among those who will dearly miss his love and wisdom include his wife of nearly 42 years, Margaret Ann (Porter); daughters, Tami Jones of Columbus, Jennifer (Heath) Cook of Powder Springs, Ga.; stepdaughters, Suzanne (Michael) Sullivant and Kristin Blake of Clearwater, Fla., Elizabeth (Ray) Pope of Vinton, Ohio; grandchildren, Adam and Paige Cook of Powder Springs; step-grandchildren, Ashley (Sean) Jackson of Cheyenne, Wyo., Matthew (Kayla) Pope of Mansfield, Ohio, Mark and Michaela Pope of Vinton and Blake and Justine Roberts of Dunedin, Fla.; and two step-great-grandchildren, Camryn and Aiden.
A memorial service will be held Monday, March 27 at noon at Liberty Presbyterian Church, 7080 Olentangy River Road, Delaware, OH 43015, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the church, Kobacker House, 800 McConnell Drive, Columbus, OH 43214 or to PIN (People in Need), 138 Johnson Drive, Delaware, OH 43015 or to the charity of your choice.

Tom was my cousin, his mother Norma Lyons Jones was my Mom Dorothy Butts Black's youngest half sister. I remember playing pitch and catch with a softball with Tom, age 6-7 at the time, in my front yard in Columbus in the summer of 1945.The Lyons/Butts family used to have a reunion in Jackson Ohio every couple of years and all the members of those two families were there including Tom and Dad Dean Jones and his Mom Norma. As an adult I worked overseas for a number of years and Tom checked in on my Mom , who was blind, regularly along with our cousin Dan Miller of Washington C.H. to make sure that she was okay and if she needed the two of them to do anything for her. She really appreciated their kindness and love the two of them expressed to her during those visits. Thanks Tom for looking ater my Mom. I heard through our cousin Jerry Lyons of Tom's serious illness and I prayed that God would relieve him of his pain and suffering, which he did by taking him to heaven to be with his Mom and Dad and our Savior Jesus Christ. Tom was a good son, husband, father and friends to so many. He made his mark here on Earth, his accomplishments noted in his obituary were many. May God rest his soul and watch over his wife Margaret and the Tom Jones family. Love you Tom-Jim Black
