Matthew Herriman Obituary
Matthew and his family moved to Poway, CA, when he was four years old. Schooling includes, Mount Olive, Saint Michaels, Painted Rock, Twin Peaks, Saint Augustine, San Marcos State and San Diego State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music.
Matthew is survived by his grandmother, Marie; father, Raymond; mother, Darleen; brothers, James, Joseph (DeNeila), and Michael; sister, Rachel (Brian); uncles, Eddie (Jenny) and Tom (Lucy); aunts, Alice, Linda (Rick), Patricia and Janice (Bill); cousins, Sherilyn, Christy, Brian, Keith, Michele and Scotty; nephews, Nathan, Phoenix and Sorin; and nieces, Molly and Genevieve. He was Godson to Bill and Janice, and Godfather to Nathan.
Matty's early passions included running, puzzles and pickles. Born to a third generation of musicians and introduced to musical theater at an early age, he quickly rose above competency in voice, piano and percussion. As Matty's musical talents grew, so did his faith in God. From Altar Boy to youth group to Catholic high school, he not only walked the faith, he rocked it. As Matthew's great love of God, theater, and music were successfully combined through education, he began tailoring his talents towards teaching and directing. Matty was the Contemporary Music Director at San Rafael Church, teaching private voice and piano lessons, and was a Music Director for youth theater productions. His early mornings were devoted to working as a barista. Matty loved spending time with his family, and was an avid sports fan, watching Padres and Chargers games after church on Sunday. He loved waking up first on Christmas, and maybe most of all, eating all the mashed potatoes. His cup overflowed with love and laughter, an impossible man to forget. May his mighty baritone voice resonate in our hearts forever.
Final resting place is at Dearborn Memorial Park, Poway, CA.
Matthew, you have slipped the bonds of earth and touched the face of God.

Dearest Matt, I remember how your piano music filled each mass at San Rafael's Church with light. I always looked forward to hearing you play the piano in mass when I visited San Diego. I also remember your kind and funny nature when I was a singer in youth group at St. Michaels Church. I will be missing you so much Michael, you are in God's hands now.

I'm so sorry for the loss of matty. I never met him, but I wish I had. He sounds like an exceptional man. My baby boy Phoenix got to meet him, his uncle, so i feel happy in that thought: we are all interconnected and we love and think about the family.

well i only knew matt for a short time but in that short time i really had fun with matt he was so out going always keep me laughing when he was around he had a heart of gold and always listen when i need to talk . so thank you matt and like that one song says gone to soon . i will miss you matty . and my thoughts and prays are with the family matt will always be in my heart forever.

I knew Matt for only a brief time. He played on our softball team at the Westwood Club. He was not a great softball player but he was the best of team mates. We will miss him.

Matt you were the greatest and always fun to be around whether it was at St. Michaels, Poway when you subbed as our fearless folk group leader when your mom could not be there or when we were are your mom and dad's house for a gathering. You will be missed.

You have given us SO many gifts - Anna singing liturgical music, and her amazing voice - you set such a wonderful example for her, and I know that you will greatly impact where she chooses to focus for college and beyond. - John's confidence to sing on stage, and do it well! I think that Matt did finish his work. He learned to love and share love as Jesus asked us to do. Many of us don't finish that task in much longer lives. We thank God for sharing Matt and his immense talent with us.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to you all during this tragic sudden loss of Matt. The two days spent celebrating a wonderful young man's life was inspiring and testiment to his life and all those he knew and loved and touched in all he did. May you all find peace, comfort and joy and love in your lives and grow in your faith too. I didn't know him in his youth, but only through his family; the bonds were strong and the shared faith was incredible. I met him a few times in his adult life and was very impressed with how he had developed and who he had become. They were enlivening and energizing, and each interaction was a great blessing. Matty was a good friend to me in High School. As for most of us it's an odd time in our life. But, getting to know Matt my first two years of HS were great, and he made a great impact on my atitude through HS and life. He showed me it's more important to be true to myself and love what you do, more so than let the atitudes of others dictate how you feel about yourself. We weren't exactly the most popular guys, but definitely two guys with a great work ethic. God Bless you buddy, I appreciate you being a great friend to me.

I attend the10:30 mass every Sunday at St. Rafael and it was an honor listening to his beutiful voice and talent. I'm sadden by his loss but I know he is with God and in a good place. RIP Matt, my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.....
