WEST OCEAN CITY — David Stein, 93, of West Ocean City died April 30, 2011, at his home, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born in Camden, N.J., to the late Hyman and Celia Stein.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ursula Stein; brother, Harry (Laurie) Stein; daughter, Wilma Carroll; stepdaughter Susan (Milton) Williams; and stepgrandchildren, Christopher and Brian Eccleston, and Stephan Nunzio. Mr. Stein is also survived by local nieces and nephews, Gregory (Pat) Stein, Michael Stein and Susan (Donald) Long, and a number of other nieces and nephews throughout the country. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by siblings, Morris Stein, Jean Steinberg, Samuel and Edward Stein and Eva Barton; and a stepson, William A. Ball.

In 1936, Mr. Stein started his professional career with his father, forming H.D. Metal Co. in Salisbury. Mr. Stein was a full partner with Hyman until joining the U.S. Army in 1941. During his military career as a staff sergeant he fought in World War II in Europe. Mr. Stein served as president and CEO of H.D. Metal Co. from 1945-95. David and Samuel Stein formed Salisbury Steel Products Inc. in 1956 as well, where David served as president and CEO until his retirement in 1985.

Throughout the years, Mr. Stein was a pillar of the community. He was a founding member of the Greater Salisbury Committee, serving as its chairman from 1975-77, chairman of the Downtown Salisbury Urban Revitalization Committee (RUDAT) and a charter member of the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, Mr. Stein was elected as a member of the Board of Trustees at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in 1970. In 1981, he was appointed chairman of the board. He served in that capacity for six years. On Feb. 4, 1988, Mr. Stein was recognized as an honorary member for his outstanding services during his 18 years on the Board of Trustees at PRMC.

In 1975, Mr. Stein was a founding member of Wor-Wic Community College, serving as the first chairman of the Board of Trustees. He received four Governor's Citations for his service to Wor-Wic Community College. On June 8, 2000, Mr. Stein was honored by the Board of Trustees of Wor-Wic Community College for his commitment and service throughout the years. He was also active in the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce and a member of Salisbury's Beth Israel Congregation.

Mr. Stein enjoyed fishing, boating, skiing, golfing, entertaining and traveling with his wife, Ursula. He was a member of Green Hill Yacht & Country Club. With a fondness for fishing, he embarked on a fishing trip to Alaska and another in Africa. Mr. and Mrs. Stein traveled together all around the world, including to Europe, China, Russia, New Zealand, Austria, Ireland and Greece, and enjoyed the many times they spent in their vacation home in Germany. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 9, at 10 a.m. in Guerrieri Hall, Wor-Wic Community College, 32000 Campus Drive, Salisbury, Md. 21804.

We had the pleasure of knowing David as a friend. We had traveled with them, and I had the opportunity to work with him as a trustee at PGHMC. He was a great man and will be remembered in Salisbury.
