Gloria Sparrow Obituary
Machipongo-Gloria Melville Sparrow,of Machipongo passed away at the age of 89 on March 14 at her home. Gloria was born on January 6, 1926, in Bourne, Massachusetts to Charles B. Lindberg and Lena Perry Lindberg of Monument Beach, Massachusetts. Gloria married her beloved husband, Irving Thompson Sparrow, a native of the Eastern Shore, when he was stationed with the United States Coast Guard in Massachusetts during World War II. Gloria and Irving raised their family along the Massachusetts and Maine coastline on lighthouses then owned and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard: Perkins Island, Seguin, Peaks Island, Nubble Light in York, Maine and Eastern Point Light Station in Gloucester, Massachusetts. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, Irving and Gloria lived in Virginia Beach and in 1973, returned to the Eastern Shore and built a home on Hungars Creek.
An avid reader, Gloria enjoyed gardening, quilting, cooking, and swimming.
Gloria is survived by daughter Orelia Sparrow Dann and her husband John of Dexter, Michigan and son Irving Thompson Sparrow, Jr. and his wife Lucille of Salisbury, Maryland; four granddaughters, Marlena Turner and her husband Jeffrey of Princess Anne, Maryland, Michele Messick and her husband Sean of Chance, Maryland, Catharine Roeber and her husband Peter of Oxford, Pennsylvania, and Orelia Elizabeth Dann of Manhattan, Kansas; five great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaugher. She was preceded in death by her husband Irving Thompson Sparrow, three sisters, and one brother.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4,at Johnson's United Methodist Church, Johnsontown, VA. Memorial donations to honor Gloria may be sent to the Johnson's United Methodist Women (c/o Mary Bracey, 8291 Birdsnest Road, Birdsnest, Va. 23307) or the Northampton Free Library ( 7745 Seaside Road, Nassawadox, Va. 23413)
