Terrence Blades Obituary

Terrence "Terry" F. Blades

POCOMOKE CITY - Terrence "Terry" F. Blades, of Pocomoke City, MD, died on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Born in Crisfield, MD, he was the son of the late Dolores and Mervin Blades.

He was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and attended the University of Maryland, College Park.

He was President/CEO of Mervin L. Blades & Son, Inc., General Contractors, of Pocomoke City, MD. The company was founded in 1939 by his father as a sand and gravel business, and eventually expanded to include a ready mix concrete operation. Terry joined the company in 1956 and moved the firm into commercial building construction. He took over the company in 1968 after his father's death and grew it into one of Delmarva's most prestigious builders. Operating the company together with his late wife, Sharlene, they received numerous industry awards and accolades for projects through the years until the company closed in 2012 at Mr. Blades' retirement. He received a "Man of the Year" award, from the Lower Shore YMCA, for his efforts in soliciting donations and for services rendered to construct the new YMCA facility in Pocomoke City. For many years, Terry also served as General Manager of Blades Materials, Inc., a division of The Arundel Corporation.

His interests included golfing, boating, and fishing. He was an avid Ravens fan and loved tailgating with friends. He was a member of Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church, Pocomoke Elks Lodge #1624, and former member of Nassawango Country Club. He enjoyed time spent at his home on the Pocomoke River, but enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by daughter Candise Blades-Dunleavy and her husband Kevin Dunleavy, grandson Kevin Brian Dunleavy, Jr., granddaughter Sharlene Kaitlin Dunleavy; sisters-in-law Barbara Somers Davis and husband John, Nicki Somers-Bashor; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by not only his parents but also his wife, Sharlene Somers Blades.

Fond memories of a fine gentleman. He always greeted me or answered the phone with enthusiasm and a smile. Few left at our company (Arundel-Florida Rock-now Vulcan) remember Blades Materials during the 1970s-80s. There was even a little tugboat named Candise Teryl that moved sand barges around in the turning basin next to the Pocomoke River.

Over the years after Holly Farms came to Delmarva in 1966 and continuing after Tyson Foods purchased Holly Terry and I put together many construction projects for my company and Blades Construction did them all. He was always a man of his word, a man I could depend on but mostly became a true friend. RIP Terry.
