Richard Nelson Obituary

Richard Nelson
August 18, 1944 - July 22, 2025
Richard Nelson, 80, of Williston, passed away at his home on July 22, 2025.
His funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Williston. Pastor Zach Harris officiated the service.
Richard Lee Nelson was born to Bennie and Anna (Stangeland) Nelson on August 18, 1944, in Williston, ND. He was raised and educated in Williston, graduating in 1962 from Williston High School.
Richard's journey in life included marriage to Cheryl Redalen and later to Melodie Haugen. He eventually found his life partner, Margo Claycomb, with whom he shared many meaningful years until her passing.
From an early age, Richard displayed a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. At the age of 14, he owned and operated "Hot Peanut" vending machines throughout Williston. Farming was a way of life for Richard but he still found time for other employment endeavors. Richard co-owned Skelly Truck Stop and was employed at Hexom Earth Construction and JMAC.
Richard enjoyed being involved with organizations, such as the Sons of Norway, the Odd Fellows, and the Elks Lodge. He was a fan and stockholder of the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and Motorcross, gardening, mowing and taking trips to the casino. For him, work was more than just an obligation-it was a hobby, and he took pride in seeing a job well done.
Richard had many nicknames, given by his friends, some of which included; Red, King Richard, Columbo, Professor and Governor. Richard is survived by his daughters, Rianna (Adam) Brunelle of Williston, ND, and Cindy (Michael) Wolery of Windsor, CO; son, Eric (Kara) Nelson of Williston, ND; brother, David Nelson of Williston, ND; sisters, Carol White and Mary (Dale) Engelbrecht, both of Williston, ND; seven grandchildren, Kasey (Sam) Franklin, AJ Brunelle, Rylin Brunelle, Emma Worley, Liam Wolery, Addison Nelson, and Thor Nelson; and one great-grandchild, that is on the way.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved partner, Margo Claycomb; son, Barry Nelson; his parents, Bennie and Anna Nelson; sister-in-law, Jean Nelson; brother-in-law, Lyle White; and numerous aunts; uncles; and cousins.
