Eddie Alba Obituary

Our community is mourning the loss of a truly great man. Eddie Alba, son, brother, uncle, friend, teacher and coach went home to be with our Lord on Friday, May 29, 2015, at the age of 64 at Mesilla Valley Hospice-La Posada in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Born to Salvador and Angela Alba on April 13, 1951, in Deming, New Mexico, Eddie attended Deming High School, later graduating from Western New Mexico University in '74 with his Social Sciences major. After a lengthy and successful career teaching mid-high History and Civics and coaching football, wrestling, and track, he retired in 2012. His accomplishments are best seen in the lives of all the family, friends, students and athletes he impacted.
To his family, he was the beloved, fun-loving baby of the Alba 8 clan. He never missed a family gathering and enjoyed being in the action. To the community, he was an accomplished and a well-respected educator and coach in both the Las Cruces and El Paso communities. While he never had his own children, he poured himself into his nieces, nephews, students and athletes. He made learning history and sports fun and even taught a great two-step. Whatever your relationship with him, it was hard not to enjoy him for his great smile, funny sense of humor and entertaining way.
Eddie loved the outdoors and spent many weekends hunting in the Gila, camping out at Puerto Penasco "Rocky Point", Mexico with his cronies or on the golf course working on his game. Our beloved will be missed by us all!
Eddie is survived by siblings Paula Roe and spouse Don Roe (CA), Fernando Alba and spouse, Belinda Alba (CA), Ricardo Alba and spouse, Patie Anne Alba (TX), Yolanda Vega and spouse, Ed Vega (NM), Armando Alba and spouse, Judy Alba (NM), Ramon Alba and spouse, Johnna Alba (AZ), and Abelardo "Kitchie" Alba and spouse, Diane Alba (CA); and over 40 nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great-niece and great-great-nephew. He was preceded in death by parents Salvador and Angela Alba, nephews Ricky Alba and David Vega and Aunt Louisa Silva.
Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 12, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda St., Las Cruces. A memorial reception will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. later that day at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Rd, Las Cruces.

It's funny, I was just thinking about Eddie, he was a childhood friend and neighbor. He lived across the street from us Gallegos's ....when he went on picnics I remember him joining up at times, he made it more fun. Rest in Peace, Eddie. ...Lani Gallegos Ziegler

Eddie was one of my original "amigos" at Western new Mexico way back when. We both went into teaching and I'm glad I got to have one last conversation with him when I was in Las Cruces recently. A good man.

My sympathy to the Alba family, Eddie was like a mentor to me and I am sadden at his passing. I was not active in his later life but I will say I though about him as a great neighbor and friend being he was my next door neighbor. Eddie I know you are in paradise, who knows we might be neighbors again.

Wow! So sad to hear from my brother of his passing. We grew up together--my neighbor from across the street. It's such a disconnect to hear of someone my age passing on. I pray that he is laughing it up his eternal life now. Maybe we'll meet again one day. Alba's, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your brother, uncle, friend.

Eddie was one of the good guys. I taught at Zia Middle School with him and enjoyed knowing him. My son Bob and daughter Patt, loved having him for a social studies teacher. He made the class interesting, but he had high standards. My daughter would iron her maps so they wouldn't have any wrinkles in them. I leave my condolences to Eddie's family. Coach Alba was one in a million! My condolences to the Alba family. He was a great role model and never had a negative thing to say to anyone. Always supportive and willing to take the time to do whatever he could to make you a better person or athlete. I truly thank God for his memory and the impact he had on all of our lives. Go with God Coach Alba and I look forward to seeing you when I get there!

Eddie and I were among some of the original Marisol/Blue Bonnet Dr babies 64 years ago! I considered him a close buddie as did my sisters. He and my mother, Barbara Seely, enjoyed a close student/teacher friendship. Decades later they would run into each other in Cruces and hug and laugh about some of his school antics.
I am saddened in that I was always going to go south, look him up and have lunch! When you have those thoughts, act on them! As my father always said, "It's later than you think."
My sympathies to the Alba family. God called back a kind, funny, HANDSOME man!
Save a seat at the lunch counter for me, Eddie!
Love,
Susan
