Carl Zollo Obituary

Chili: November 6, 2009. Predeceased by his parents; Antonio and Adelina, and brother; Sam. Survived by his loving brothers; Louis Zollo, Raymond (Catherine) Zollo and Anthony Zollo: special uncle to; Michael Zollo, Jean (Larry) Pearston, Dr. Raymond Zollo, Sandra (Grant) Perry, Scott (Tracy) Zollo and Heidi (Eric) Wooledge: great-nieces and great-nephews; Lauren, Shaun, Mason, Lexi, Carli, Abby, Zach and Travis.
Born November 10, 1928, Carl Zollo was a native Rochestarian and the son of Italian immigrants. A graduate of RIT, he worked in professional theater and became art director for TV Channel 8. After taking evening classes at the Memorial Art Gallery he was invited to learn welding as a sculpturing tool. Carl explored this medium as a vehicle for the design credo that permeated his metal work, dramatic design that must picque attention from a distance. An example is the 8,000 pound sculpture at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.
He has works in numerous public buildings including the Rochester Art Gallery, Strasenburgh Planetarium, Eastman Kodak Company, Pfaudler Company, the Gannett Foundation, and Nazareth College, including the Casa Italiana. He was the force behind Festeggiamo Le Arti, a biennial exhibit of works of art by Italian-American artists in the Rochester area. An active volunteer with the American Red Cross, he worked for many years on the annual Fire and Ice fund raising event. A founding member of Blackfriars, he helped design sets for the local theater group as well as the Memorial Art Gallery, the George Eastman House, and the Strasenburgh Planetarium. He also served as Art Director for three motion pictures films.
In 1988, Arts For Greater Rochester honored him as Individual of the Year for his life-long contribution to art, calling him Rochester's Treasure. The Sons of Italy honored him in 1990 with the Artist of the Year Award and in 1991 he received the Rochester Chamber of Commerce's Culture and Arts Award. In 1993, Casa Italiana of Nazareth College awarded its annual Recognition Award to Carl for his many contributions promoting the arts in Rochester. Carl will be sadly missed but joyfully remembered by his family and many many friends.
Friends may call Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Leo M. Bean and Sons Funeral Home, 2771 Chili Avenue. Funeral Mass Thursday, 11:00am at Holy Ghost Church, 220 Coldwater Rd. I have many memories of growing up and never knowing what to expect in a card that would arrive in the mail from Carl, or a sculpture or drawing that would be in a prominent spot in the house - and the joy I know it brought my mom over the years from her great friendship. I am so glad we got to know you Carl for so long, that mom and you got to reconnect in the last year and that you are now at peace.

From the early pioneer days of WVET-TV to the halcyon area of WROC-TV, Carl was one of a handful I truly regarded as a friend. He not only designed and built every set for every show on which I appeared, he was always a willing confidant who advised me how to make each program memorable. Whatever successes I achieved in television, Carl, more than anyone, assisted me in every capacity. He was in many respects a master craftsman. My wife Chris and I wish to express condolences to his family.

Carl, thanks for the little bird sculpture, the tree and the artwork you gave us. We will treasure them. Thanks for all the ZolloFest postcards. Thanks for your love and care shown to our family. Uncle Carl... we will miss you.

Even though, we are thousands miles apart, we prayed for you and will always remember you in our prayers.

Here is a prayer for our dear friend Carl:
"Oh my God, O Thou forgiver of sins, bestower of gifts, dispeller of afflictions. Verily I beseech Thee to forgive the sins of such as have abandoned the physical garment and have ascended to the spiritual world.

O my Lord! Purify them from trespasses, dispel their sorrows, and change their darkness into light. Cause them to enter the garden of happiness, cleanse them with the most pure water, and grant them to behold Thy splendors on the Loftiest mount."

We were very sorry to read of Carls passing. We have known him for many many years. The cross he made for us for our wedding gift has hung in our home for 40 years. So we always think of him when we look at it. Our prayers are with your entire family and the friends who will miss him. We are confidant that Carl is in a better place. Unfortunately due to illness, we were unable to attend his services but we were there in heart. We look forward to seeing Carl again, as well as our loved ones who he has joined. May he rest in peace.

Joan and I will miss Carl---he was gentle, kind, generous, humorous and talented. We kept up a bed side vigil through the daily postings of Andy and are relieved to know that he suffers no more.
A story that exemplifies Carl's true personality took place some years back when we entertained at a dinner party---several couples and Carl. Someone posed the question,"what would you do if you won the lottery?" There were lots of diverse responses but Carl's remains in my memory. He answered," I would create my art and give it away to my friends." He was saying---I wouldn't have to sell it but I would give it away as a token of my love and friendship.
We have a number of Carl's sculptures and won't pass by any of them without thinking about our great friend----who is probably sculpting right now for a more importance audience. Joan and Jim Ryan

My boys and I had the pleasure of really getting to know and love Carl, over this past summer at Aunt Jean's great "Thursday night dinner-and-card" nights!

My son, Jake, thought he had the WORST first summer college job EVER until Carl told us about HIS first summer college job - he made Jake feel OH so much better!

We will all so miss Carl!

Uncle Carl,
We will miss the wonderful friendship and love you had for all our family. I feel so fortunate to have been able to spend a lot of time with you this past year again - especially playing cards. You may now be just beyond that horizon past which we cannot yet see, but you are in our hearts forever. And when God calls us, we will see that beautiful sculpture you are now creating for Him. God bless.
