David Gandell Obituary
Dr. David Lee Gandell passed away March 4th, 2021 surrounded by his wife and children. He was a dedicated obstetrician-gynecologist and philanthropist who cared deeply for his patients and delivered more than 5,000 babies throughout his distinguished career. He is responsible for training countless physicians as a faculty member at the University of Rochester Medical Center and inspired his colleagues with his advocacy for his patients and profession as an active member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was a gifted orator, loved to dance, and had a thirst for adventure, qualities that he shared with his spouse and passed on to his beloved children and grandchild. He was the loving husband of Rev. Dahn Dean Gandell; devoted father of Rachel (Justin) Tetlow, Ryan Gandell, Lillian Gandell, Hannah Gandell, and Madeline Coughlin; doting grandfather to Oliver Tetlow; dear Uncle of Myles (Elizabeth Diaz) Gideon and Michael (Jennifer Smith) Gideon; and cherished cousin of Jerry (Pam) Halpern and Susan Halpern. A private memorial gathering with family and close friends will take place at a later date. I just found out about David´s death. I felt very sad. I have many wonderful memories of David. We shared a great friendship at one time. I went to make an appointment with Dr. Gandell and was shocked and heartbroken to learn of his passing. He delivered two of my babies. He was wonderful. In addition to being caring and compassionate, he was competent and thorough. I know he still had a lot of charity work and other projects he was looking forward to doing, not to mention retirement. My heart goes out to his wife and daughters.

Dr Gandell was my Dr for 30 years. He delivered 3 of my 4 babies. He was like a second father to me during my pregnancies. He always had a smile and really cared about his patients. He delivered many of my friend's and families babies. He helped me alot throughout the years and was my 'go to' for advice as a great doctor.

I previously wrote a message of condolences, and have since been reading so many messages here on this page of remembrance.
I am in awe of the stories and memories people have shared.
As I read through the messages, most of them for the second time, I started to jot down the words that people used to describe Dr. Gandell, or to thank him. Soon I had a list of over twenty different adjectives! All kind , and genuine. Dr. Gandell was such a special man. I hope his family is still reading these messages, as I would imagine it would offer some comfort to see how much of an impact her had on all the people he knew and cared for.

I learned of Dr. Gandell’s passing today. My daughter (who he delivered) contacted his office because she is pregnant. We are heartbroken. I have gone to Dr.Gandell for over 40 years. He delivered both of my children. He never failed to make me laugh even in the most stressful times. He always suggested natural remedies for my issues first. My condolences to his family. He was just wonderful.

Beyond shocked and devastated by this news. Echoing many of the comments here, I've been a patient of his for 37 years. He was THE MOST kind, assuring, educated, professional, outstanding doctor and human being. He always spoke so lovingly about his wife and children. He had a great sense of humor. I was also surprised to see his age, he always looked 10 years his junior. He was just the most amazing healthcare professional I've ever known. I'm so sad for all who have been blessed by knowing him, and so sad for him that he didn't get to enjoy growing old with his wife and to love on future grand babies. Praying for his family and his patients as we all figure out how to move forward without him. Such a huge loss.

Dr Gandall delivered my first child in 1992. He was not my regular doctor, but 28 years later I remember his humorous words "my dear, this baby is a big one...he isn't going to be born the way you want it". He was right, my boy of 9#. He had humor and kindness which I feel are two important qualities a doctor should have. My daughter also had a visit with him in 2019. She called me and raved about this wonderful doctor she had just met. He was very understanding and likable. She like him so much that she wanted to request a change to him. Sometimes we have unique individuals who come in and out of our lives, but those individuals who make a difference in our lives....we remember them years late. I just open the letter letting me know that Dr. Gandell had passed. I wish I had taken the opportunity to tell him what an amazing doctor he was. He was my OB/GYN since I was a teenager like many others have posted here and I always felt comfortable with him. I couldn't believe the news when I opened the mail today. My heart goes out to Dr. Gandell’s family. His presence in the world will be greatly missed. Dr Gandell delivered my sisters children over 40 years ago and she had nothing but good things to say about him. So when I had the opportunity to find a new GYN doctor in 2003, I jumped at the chance to become his patient, and he's been my doctor ever since. Although I didn't see him this year, last year, I had an opportunity to tell him how much I appreciated his genuine care over the years. He had the best bedside manner. No matter how busy the office was, he never rushed in and out, but instead, he always took time to listen and was present during my visits.

I am so shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of my beloved OBGYN, Dr. David Gandell. I just learned the news moments ago, and ran to Google to find out what happened. I saw him just days ago. He was an incredible doctor--knowledgeable, kind, generous with his time, and truly loving. My twins were born 13 years ago weighing just over one pound. He guided me and my husband through that very difficult time. Prior to that I had infertility, and he was there for me then. More recently, I've had an extremely volatile perimenopause, and he's been so gracious and helpful, steering me to treatments that would alleviate my suffering. He was open-minded, grounded, humorous, and so very supportive. To his family: my heart aches for your loss. I am so, so sorry. What an incredible soul. My we join him in the Great Beyond when it's our time, too. So much love. Just so much love.

I am so disheartened to hear of the passing of Dr. Gandell. He was an incredible and frankly, memorable doctor. I have never felt comfortable with male doctors until I met him. It seems I am not alone in the profound sadness I feel after hearing the news. Dr. Gandell was my doctor for the past 25 years and he always took wonderful care of me and showed me a great deal of compassion after my mother passed away. I'll never forget when he told me I was pregnant after many years of secondary infertility. I can still see the sparkle in his eye. I am devastated that I never took the opportunity to thank him for everything he has done for me through the years. What a great loss for his family and the many lives he has touched. I opened my mail today never expecting this to be the news inside the letter. I met Dr. Gandell about 35 years ago. One of his first words to me upon meeting him were " you have a large pelvic mass"....he scheduled me for surgery within a few days. He was my hero and I have been his patient ever since. He was an amazing Doctor, he was so kind and always had time to listen and he really really cared about you. He had an amazing sparkle in his eyes. I am very saddened by this news. When I received the letter in the mail today informing me of Dr. Gandell's passing, I just cried. He is the one and only OBGYN I have ever had and I'm 52 years old. From being so kind, reassuring and gentle as a teenager visiting him for the first time to the birth of my son 20 years later, he has always been an incredible doctor and amazing human. His loss was such a shock. Dr. Gandell was my OB/GYN for over 30 years, he delivered both my daughters, and was also my daughter with Down Syndrome's OB/GYN. Dr. Gandell was an amazing supportive doctor. I remember when he delivered my second child. He had a party to go to that night and he showed up at the hospital all decked out. He ended up skipping the party. He ended up staying with me the entire time until he delivered my baby, who is now 20 years old! Dr Gandell saved my life, literally. 15 years ago in January I was sent to him by another Dr in the practice for a procedure to stop my bleeding. Dr Gandell talked to me and we made the arrangements to have the procedure done, until my husband said how do you know that it's just not a tear or cut? Typically, in his style,he went above and beyond and did an internal only to find that I had a lesion on my cervix. I had Non Hodgekins lymphoma on my cervix. So rare and fast spreading. I would of died. I wasn't his patient but it didn't matter. I felt so thankful for him. We walked through my cancer together. He was my double check to make sure I was still ok. We talked about it every visit and he reassured me every 6 months that I was good. I am lost right now. His reassuring words, his genuine concern, his honest answers, gentle way of asking me to take care of myself. I hope you didn't suffer and that I told you enough how much I appreciated you and wouldn't be here without you. You did so much good in your life so unselfishly. You will be soooo missed. Rest in peace!

Dr. Gandell was my doctor for probably close to 30 years. He was creative, smart, thorough, caring, and a stable and trusted presence in my health and wellness journey. This hurts my heart. I would like to send my sincerest condolences to family & friends of Dr. Gandell. I became his patient in the late '80's and I remain his patient currently. The genuine concern of this man has been second to none. He gave great counsel to the young me and a listening ear always. I trusted him more than any of my other doctors and I will miss him being an advocate in my life. Dr. Gandell was the most kind and caring man. He was there for my husband and I thru 3 pregnancies and brought our 2 beautiful children into this world. I called the office today to make my appointment as I hadn't been in since before the pandemic began. I'm heartbroken. Dr. Gandell was like family. He coached and guided me through the births of both of my beautiful babies. The first in 2002 when I was a young college student and despite my undetected preeclampsia that time and my "high risk" pregnancy 15yr later at 38yrs old and the umbilical cord being wrapped around my baby boys neck.. he got them both here alive, well and they both are thriving. I shed tears for you and what you meant to our family. I trusted you literally with my life and those that are most precious to me. My condolences to your family whom I know you loved so very deeply. What an catastrophic loss to our community.

Dr. David Gandell was a kind and caring man, a respected obstetrician and gynecologist, a honored colleague and friend. David was an outspoken advocate for women’s health, a compassionate physician who deeply cared for his patients and a man who obviously enjoyed life. We greatly valued David’s humanity and are immensely saddened by his passing. Our sincere condolences go out to his family.

Dr. Gandell was my Doctor for 33 years, delivered 2 of my children and performed 3 different surgeries on me and discovered an illness I was unaware I had. Dr. Gandell helped to heal me and educate me to live a healthier life. He has helped me in so many ways in the 33 years that I have had the honor to know him. Rest in peace Mr. Gandell, you have definitely made a difference in this world. I will truly miss you and I will forever be grateful for all that you have done for me.

Dr.Gandell was my Dr for 37 years and he was always there to listen, always took the time to talk if needed. We have had many laughs and many tears. He delivered all 3 of my children. Such a compassionate soul. He will be greatly missed by so many.

I am so sad to hear Dr. Gandell passed.
Dr. Gandell had made so many wonderful connections with so many people and touched so many lives, including mine.
I met Dr. Gandell only a few times when he spoke on behalf of my product/pharmaceutical company a few years ago in the Chicago area. (Excellent speaker always engaging the audience.)
I had just adopted a Sheepadoodle puppy and shared my photos and stories of my unique pup! Dr. Gandell shared the love he and his family had with their own dogs/pets over the years and his interest to maybe get a Sheepadoodle puppy one day! And then approximately a year passed by, since we last spoke, out of the blue, Dr. Gandell remembered me...and sent a text to let me know he proudly “adopted” a Sheepadoodle and shared beautiful photos of his first Sheepadoodle puppy and other dogs! The photo showed so much love he had for his sheepadoodle puppy and the love he and his family had for their family dogs/pets!!! My deepest Sympathy to the entire Gandell Family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you!

I have known Dr. Gandell for more than 35 years. He has been my doctor during that time, and brought all 3 of our children into the world (1987, 1991, and 1996)! I am also a nurse, so had the pleasure of taking care of his patients in the out patient hospital setting for several years.
My sincere condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family, and also his friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I am so sad to hear Dr. Gandell passed. He delivered my son Will 22 years ago. He was the kindest man. Beyond that, Dr. Gandell brought Mona Lisa Therapy to Rochester. A ground breaking procedure for post-menopausal women,, it provided long term relief and I am forever grateful for his dedication and commitment to his field. When he asked if I would speak about my experience with Mona Lisa in a public forum I did so without hesitation. I am grateful for Dr. Gandell and will miss him so much.

I am overwhelmed with great sadness to hear of the passing of Dr. Gandell. He was my first physician that I sought out as a young woman when I first moved to Rochester in 1983. A truly remarkable human being. David Gandell has been my Dr for 35 years. Not only was he my Dr. but also a friend. He'd listen to anything and everything, for as long as you needed him to. You were his top priority when you were with him. He made me laugh and gave me a shoulder to cry on many times. I thank God that he delivered my 4 children and that I had him in my life. Dr Gandell was truly a lovely man. His warmth and selflessness was always felt by those who came into contact with him. He was a generous teacher and advocate for women’s health. His love for his family was abundant and he talked proudly of them and with great love on everyone of our visits. My heart is broken and the world has truly lost a very special man. David was a friend and colleague of 40 years. Whenever I saw him, his energy and compassion for others was always an enormously positive and joyful part of my life. My wife Joanna Heal and I were always delighted to see you at GEVA and share a few minutes of conversation. David was one of the most principled and courageous physicians I've ever known, and totally lacking in pretension. Just a wonderful physician and human being. Joanna and I will miss him and extend our deepest condolences to Dahn and his family. This is also a great loss for his OB-GYN colleagues, and we extend our sympathies to them.
