Frank Kinsman Obituary

William "Bill"

Fairport: Bill passed away at home on December 26, 2016, at the age of 91. He had just celebrated Christmas Eve surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and wife. Bill was a kind, soft-spoken, and very intelligent man with a dry sense of humor. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty, his children Robert (Bettina) Kinsman, Susan (Scott) Kelso, Andrew Kinsman, Thomas (Lynn) Kinsman, Ted (Margot Buschang) Kinsman, and his grandchildren Wendy, Joseph, Nicole, William, Michael, Jade, Kristy, Tim, Theresa, Devon, Duncan, Garrett, Meredith, and Parker.

Bill was very humble about his accomplishments, yet he held a M.S. from Stanford, and graduated summa cum laude with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University. Bill started his career at Bell Labs, where he was instrumental in developing the push-button telephone and early underwater ocean telephone lines. He founded the department of Mechanical Technology at Monroe Community College, and spent over 30 years teaching and mentoring students as a professor. He enriched the lives of many students, who called him "Doc," and kept in touch with him long after graduation. One of Dr. Kinsman's accomplishments was winning the prestigious Machine Design LeMouse 5000 contest in 1972, for which he built a model car powered by a mousetrap spring.

Above all, Bill was proud of and dedicated to his family. He took them camping in the summer and skiing in the winter. Bill spent summers at Keuka Lake where he built a cottage out of an old barn. He liked to design and build things, canoe, plant snapdragons, hike, and travel.

There will be no calling hours or public service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Finger Lakes Museum and Aquarium, P.O. Box 96, Keuka Park, NY 14478 or fingerlakesmuseum.org.

So sorry to hear about "Doc".
I had him for the two years at MCCC, graduated in 1983. Smartest man I ever met and a huge inspiration. I was able to go on to receive a BSME, successfully pass the P.E. exam and for the last 17 years have been self employed as a forensic engineer, he was definitely a part of my success.
I remember at the graduation ceremony the MET students were getting a bit loud, he looked back at us with that look of "you better conduct yourselves more appropriately", that's all it took, you could hear a pin drop in our section, that's the kind of respect he earned from us.
Never heard an unkind word spoken about him.

To the Kinsman family: deepest condolences to you. Dr. Kinsman was a fine gentleman. I had the pleasure of being one of his students in the MET graduating class of 1980. That poor man must have lay awake at night trying to figure out a way to get thru to me. He didn't fail me, I just didn't study enough. Despite my lack of natural ability, Doc treated me with respect and never gave up on me. For that I am eternally grateful. I will never forget him. How lucky you all were to have him as a husband, father, and grandfather. God bless you all.

My sincere condolences to the family.
Dr. Kinsman was one of those rare professors that really 'made a difference' with his students on many different levels. After almost 50 years since I sat in one of his mechanical engineering classes, I can still remember being impressed with his gift reaching young minds.
Happy Trails Doc-

Our family will forever remember the summer days and nights spent at the lake with the Kinsman clan. Bill was never happier than with his grandchildren and others were there to help and entertain him. Thank you all for these amazing memories.

Betty and Bill were the very first people Malcolm and I had to dinner when we were newlyweds in Rochester. Thankfully they lent us chairs for the dining room or we would have been eating off our laps on the sofa. We made WAY too much food. Especially potatoes. Of course, after dinner, we played Pirate's Bridge.

So many happy memories of Bill! From
Pleasant Way, to the sing-around Cabin parties (and moving the outhouse!), to the wonderful house in the woods and all the White Elephant parties, to the home on the Erie Canal and the pot luck dinners. Witty, welcoming, warm William!

One of my earliest memories was around 1960-61 on Pleasant Way in Penfield, when Bill set up the telescope he had made, and we looked at the moon. I still have that image in my head, it was a revelation! I was five or six years old at the time.

My prayers are with the entire family. My favorite memory of him is seeing him paddle the canoe across Keuka Lake.
I hope all of you find comfort in your photos and memories of Bill.

Okay, the first memory that popped right into my head and that brought a huge smile to my face...he prepared the BEST PANCAKES ever (with Betty right by his side). I send you all many wishes of comfort and sympathy as you honor your devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy of inquisition, creativity, and knowledge will live on forever. Love, Beth Wheeler
