Murray Wicker Obituary

Wicker, Murray Richard
Columbia, SC: 69, died Monday, August 27 in Columbia, South Carolina, after a brief illness.
Mr. Wicker was born to Ida and George Wicker on November 2, 1937, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He was a graduate of Brighton H.S., and attended St. John Fisher College and the University of Rochester. As a teenager in 1953, Murray worked for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, beginning a 39 year career with the Gannett newspaper organization. In 1960 he married Carol Coene also of Rochester. They had three children. During the mid-1970's Murray's job took him and his family from Rochester, to Rockford, Illinois, to Springfield, Missouri as he steadily advanced within Gannett becoming the advertising director of the Springfield News-Leader in the spring of 1978. In 1984, Murray became the advertising director for the Wilmington Delaware News Journal, a position he held until his retirement in 1992. In 1994 Murray moved to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina to enjoy the warmer weather and play golf.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother Ralph; and is survived by his children: Louis, Laura, and Amy; grandson Benjamin; brothers Earle and Michael and sister Sylvia.
